The lower part of Monemvasia castle town, turned out to be my favourite one. More spacious, less busy and equally beautiful with the rest of the town, it gave me the feeling that if I ever wanted to live there, this is the neighbourhood that fits me!
It is funny that even in a place so small as this, I have found the most quiet, the most outlying part of the town to became my preferable one. I guess that after so many years trying to avoid the masses, it comes as a reflex but still, it sounds silly in a town that is barely 300 meters (less than 1.000 feet) from one side to the other!
Of course I don't know how quiet it is now, in the middle of the summer. Actually I know even if I am not there. It is not quiet, it is the exact opposite of it. But the many houses that are not fit to live in and the empty space around the castle walls are a promising start. It was April when I visited it and everything was more gentle then, very few people, cool weather, no distractions.
I know that most of you love summer but myself, as someone that lives in a country that accommodates millions of tourists each year, I know that the most beautiful parts of my country tend to become dreadful during the high season.
So here I am, sitting at my desk, under the air-condition, looking at the pictures of the last excursion with cool weather and waiting the night breeze for a walk by the sea. With temperatures around 38-40°C (100-104°F) on a daily basis, I am already eagerly anticipating autumn. Anyway September to December in Greece, are great months to enjoy the sea and have outdoors activities apart of course from the fact that the daylight lasts less hours.
But I prefer it from the brutal summer sun that makes me stay indoors most of the day!
I shouldn't forget to mention two more advantages of the part I am showing you today. It is the two openings of the walls, one to the sea and one to the rest of the island. It may sound elementary but let me remind you that we are talking about a medieval, fortified, castle town with only one entrance.
I shared a few pictures of the opening to the sea in the previous post about Monemvasia so below you can see the second opening to the land. And for one more time it was the dog that enjoyed it the most :)
