Summer has ended... harvesting time!

I haven't been posting a #Hivegarden #Gardenjournal update for a while. That is because most of my backyard vegetable garden projects failed miserably. Where last year it were the slugs and snails to blame, this year it is all my own fault. I have quite a bad planning and started seeding way too late in the year. My seedlings probably didn't have enough roots before I planted them in the garden and I should have given them some more water during the long, dry period. My string beans, beetroot and cucumbers all didn't do well. Apart from that I moved two plants when I reorganised my garden, but my Rhododendron took a hit from that and isn't looking very well. And it should stay green during the winter 🤨

But it isn't all bad news that I have. Last I had some small cherry tomato plants that were attacked by snails and slugs. The tomatoes weren't edible, so I left them to they could decompose. But this year I noticed some small plants which where the tomatoes were last year. At first I thought it were weeds, but when I smelled the flowers I knew it were tomato plants. Everyone who has even planted tomatoes knows this smell.

So the seeds from last year just grew into new plants. Somehow they don't grow up, like they did earlier, but the stay near the ground. Anyways, they have yielded me some nice cherry tomatoes, which came very unexpected.

Another success story is my almond tree. It was full of fruits this year. Even more than last year. Yesterday I noticed that some of the hulls had opened up. Time to get them out of the tree.

I collected them all in a bowl and there were quite a lot of them. 52 in total. Although it seems like a lot, these hulls contain a wooden shell which contains the actual almond. The almonds itself are just 1 centimeter in size. And the shells are very hard to crack open as well. So a lot of work for a handful of almonds, but it's fun that I have grown them myself and it's a nice tree as well, so I don't mind.

I haven't picked my apples yet, but I think they are ready for it. At least most of them. It's strange how some of them are quite big, like the one in the picture below, but some are just bigger than a ping pong ball and totally green. I have about six of these big ones that have turned a bit red already, so I'll pick them later this week.

My raspberry is doing very well as it does every year. From June it has been giving us a handful of delicious, sweet raspberries and until now it still does. It also grows a lot of new plants alongside the original bush. Sometimes a new plant sprouts more than a meter away from my bush.

And the end isn't in sight yet. Some branches still have unripe raspberries on them. I do hope we'll be getting some more sun in the coming weeks because that makes them nice and sweet (at least, that is what I think 😀).

Finally I have some tea herbs. I have three types of mint and this melon balm which are all doing very well. The plant has really grown big over the year. By cutting off the end of the twigs, the plants is stimulated to grow fuller. You can see that it really helped.

So, that was my #Hivegarden #Gardenjournal for the end of the summer. Thanks for reading my blog!
