The Tenant is the third book I've been reading from Freida Mc Fadden this year. Earlier this year I read The Teacher and The Wife Upstairs by Freida Mc Fadden, so I already knew I liked her style of writing. Freida writes psychological thrillers with a lot of unexpected plot twists.
The story
The book begins with Blake, a succesful young businessman who just got promoted to vice president of the company he works for. He is living a luxury life with his fiancée Krista in their appartment in New York. But then everything changes. Blake is accused of leaking information to competitors and being fired. In a few weeks, Blake en Krista cannot pay the mortgage anymore and they decide to rent out one of their rooms. From the couple of people that applied for the room, Whitney seems to be the only normal one; friendly, calm and polite, so they decide that she can move in. In the beginning it went quite well, but soon Blake gets annoyed by the behavior of Whitney. It also doesn't help that it's difficult to find a new job after being accused by his former boss. He hates the job he eventually finds and it doesn't pay enough to get rid of Whitney. Over time things get worse and a lot of weird things happen in the appartement. You read the story through the eyes of Blake, but halfway of the book you read it from Krista's point of view, which is quite different. Freida wouldn't be Freida if there weren't some nice plot twists in the book. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a page turner again, just like the other books from Freida Mc Fadden.
I would rate it 4 out of 5 and can recommend it to anyone that likes psychological thrillers.
