Greetings to everyone here. I deeply admire all the farmers and gardeners who are part of this wonderful community. This is my first post of this kind. I am from Venezuela and I am an artist. You may wonder, what is an artist doing in this wonderful community?
Saludos a todos por acá, les admiro profundamente a todos los agricultores y jardineros que hacen parte de esta hermosa comunidad, este es mi primer post de este tipo, soy de Venezuela y soy artista. Se preguntarán, qué hace una artista en esta maravillosa comunidad?
Well, I'm trying to connect with the place I come from. I'm from El Junquito, a parish in Caracas, which is a few minutes' drive away. The thing is, it's a fairly rural area, so everything is green here. Almost everyone has a garden at home, and if not, they probably have a mango or banana tree.
Pues se trata de que estoy intentando conectar con el lugar de donde vengo, yo soy del Junquito, es una parroquia de Caracas, que se encuentra a unos cuantos minutos de viaje, la cosa es que, es una zona bastante rural, por lo que todo es verde por acá. Casi todos tienen un jardín en su casa y si no, alguna planta de mango o plátano seguramente.
We have several banana plants at home, and today I'm sharing with you a large harvest that my brother and I picked. Normally, banana plants produce their first harvest 10 to 15 months after being planted. This is a large plant that had already grown quite a bit, and it took four months for the bunch to be ready for harvest.
En mi casa tenemos varias plantas de cambur o banana y hoy les comparto una gran cosecha que hicimos mi hermano y yo, normalmente las plantas de cambur o banana dan su primera cosecha 10 o 15 meses luego de ser plantadas. Está es una gran planta que ya había crecido bastante y su racimo tardo 4 meses en estar listo para la cosecha.
Sometimes we realize that the bunch is ready because the bananas are starting to ripen, but we always try to pick them earlier so that the birds don't damage the bunch. When a bunch is not ready for harvest, we can see that the bananas have very sharp edges. As they grow, these edges become less pronounced, and when the banana is almost completely smooth around the edges, we know it is ready for harvest.
A veces nos damos cuenta de que el racimo está listo porque los cambures o bananas empiezan a madurar, pero intentamos siempre bajarlo antes para que los pájaros no dañen el racismo. Cuando un racismo no está listo para la cosecha podemos ver qué las bananas tienen un filo muy marcado, a medida de que este crece esos filos se van borrando, y cuando el cambur está casi completamente liso en sus bordes es cuando podemos estar seguros que está listo para la cosecha.
Generally, since we are on a mountain and not on flat ground, the plant must be tied down before cutting the raceme, so that when it yields, it does not damage or destroy anything around it. on this occasion it was not necessary. Once the bunch is down, each leaf of the plant must be removed and thrown on the ground. This, together with the roots that remain there, becomes fertilizer for the small plants that are on their way. The approximate weight of this racismo was 90 pounds or 40 kg, which is too much for a racismo of bananas, as they normally weigh 50 or 60 pounds, and we did not harvest just one but two racismos, although the other one was not as big in comparison.
Generalmente y como vinimos en una montaña y no en un terreno plano, hay que amarrar la planta antes de cortar el racismo, para que al momento de ceder no dañe o destruya nada a su alrededor y el terreno no ceda con ella,pero en está ocasión no fue necesario por su ubicación, una vez que el racimo está abajo hay que retirar cada hoja de la planta y tirarla al suelo, ésto junto a la raíz que quedan allí se convierten en abono para las pequeñas plantas que vienen en camino. El peso aproximado de este racismo fue de 90 libras o 40 kg, esto es demasiado para un racismo de bananas, normalmente pesan 50 o 60 libras, y no cosechamos uno solo sino dos racismo, claro el otro no era tan grande en comparación.
My brother and I had to carry it between us because it was so big, and then we went back for the other one. Some of the bananas were already ripe, which means they were perfect for harvesting. Everyone in the house loves bananas, especially because there are so many ways to prepare them and serve them with meals. However, I think we'll have to give some away because there are too many.
Tuvimos que cargarlo entre mi hermano y yo, porque era muy grande y luego volvimos por el otro, algunos cambures del racismo ya estaban maduros, eso nos indica que está perfecto para ser cosechado. A todos en la casa nos encanta el cambur, sobre todo porque existen infinidad de formas para prepararlo y acompañar las comidas, sin embargo creo que tendremos que regalar algunos porque es demasiado.
I am very grateful to have these plants in my home. We do not sell anything we harvest here. It is always for our own consumption and to give to our loved ones. In my home, there are also mango, chili pepper, avocado, and coffee plants that my mother harvests and processes here at home. I would very much like to share those harvesting processes with you here in the future.
Agradezco mucho poder tener estás plantas en mi casa, no vendemos nada de lo que cosechamos acá. Siempre es para nuestro propio consumo y para obsequiar a los más cercanos. En mi casa también hay plantas de mango, de ají, de aguacate y de café que mi madre cosecha y procesa aquí en casa.
