Episode 2 of It, Welcome to Derry, dropped a few days ago, and boy was it ever good. We got a definitive answer whether the cliffhanger from the premiere was just a dream, got to experience some more of the racism that Derry offers, and delved more into the mystery of what the secret military project is.
While the A plot followed Lilly and Veronica as they deal with the aftermath of what happened in the theater, episode 2 really shines in its B plot where Leroy Hanlon ( Mike Hanlon’s grandfather) uncovers the conspiracy that is happening at the Derry Airforce base.

If you haven’t watched episode 2 yet, consider this your spoiler warning as I will be going over who attacked Leroy in the previous episode, and the ending of Episode 2.
The local Airforce racist is arrested for the attack on Hanlon in the previous episode and thrown into military jail. But there is a problem, and it all comes down to a little gun. If you're gun savy, you might know that the gun used in the attack was a Makarov PM. I’m not, but don’t worry because we are told that this is the type of gun that was used. According to Leroy, this gun is extremely hard to handle thanks to its tricky reload mechanism. Later, when Leroy visits Masters in jail, he places an empty Makarov and magazine in front of him, and then goads him. Master’s reaches for the gun to shoot Leroy but could not load the gun.

When Hanlon confronts General Shaw about this, the truth is dropped. The attack was a test to see if Leroy had “what it takes”. The general drops some good ole back story on us telling the audience that during Leroy’s time in Korea, Leroy got in an accident and suffered brain damage which had stopped his amygdala (the part of your brain responsible for emotions) to stop working properly, as a result he can’t experience fear.

It, Pennywise, the creep that lives in the sewers, whatever you want to call it feeds on fear, or more correctly, craves it. So, it’s pretty obvious that Leroy is going to play a big part of this season. Especially when it’s revealed that the military is digging for something that will give it a leg up against the Soviets. What is it? They don’t know. What they do know is that it terrorizes people. It is fear itself weaponized. Thanks to an individual who seems to have The Shining, the military has been finding beacons pointing them towards whatever this is.
Episode 2 ends with the discovery of one of these beacons, which is a car containing three skeletal figures. The car seems to be a callback to Stephen King’s short story called Dolan’s Cadillac, where a teacher goes on a quest for revenge against his wife’s killers, which see’s him burying them alive in a car.

But that has nothing to do with the episode; instead, we are just made to believe this is a beacon. Putting my thinker cap on, it’s kind of obvious that Dick Hallorann ( the individual with the Shining, who is also in The Shining) is somehow zoning in on the “fear” that It leaves behind.

What exactly is this weapon the military is looking for? Is it simply It? I don’t think that’s the case as Pennywise isn’t known to the government. And we never see Leroy make any mention of It during the movies. Here, we delve even further into Stephen King’s universe .
All of King’s books take place in the same universe. That’s why there are often callbacks to other books. In King’s universe there is a thing called the Macroverse, a dimension where monsters lurk and where It is from. During Episode 1 I figured that Operation Perception ( the name of what the military is doing in Welcome to Derry) was an attempt to use interdimensional travel to beat the good old Reds.
This would tie in with The Mist, the short story and movie, about a mysterious mist that rolls into town bringing with it all kinds of monsters. It’s explained in that story that the military was working on something called Project Arrowhead, and one can surmise that this was the military trying to open a portal to the Macroverse. And as a result, the creatures that inhabit that space broke through to our world.

It’s clear that my previous theory was wrong, so what will the air force find in Welcome to Derry? Honestly, I don’t know. But whatever it is, it’s almost certainly going to lead to the discovery of this dimension beyond ours and tie in with The Mist, The Shining, and other Stephen King properties.
