Today I visited the Plaza de San Francisco in Old Havana. It's a place famous for many things; I remember it used to be called "the pigeon square" (though this time, I didn't see many pigeons). The square is centered around a church that, according to a sign almost hidden on the wall, was founded in 1743. Outside, there's a marble statue of a beloved figure: El Caballero de París, an "elegant madman" who was famous in the 20th century for his politeness, refinement, and old-world manners.
