Emily sat in her chair staring out the window. It was still early but she knew that today was going to be a special day. She was expecting her children to come visit. She didn't see them as often anymore but surely they would come and visit her on this special day.
Oh, how she adored them when they were babies. She and John had been married for nearly five years, when the first baby came along. Little Anthony. He was such a beautiful baby and she quit her job immediately when she found out that she was pregnant. She spent every waking moment fixing up his room and preparing for his birth. What a joyful day it was the day that he was born. She had been in labor for nearly fourteen hours, but when she saw that little face all the pain had been forgotten.
Shortly after, she became pregnant again, and little Sylvia was born hardly a year and a half later. She had her hands full, but she didn't mind. She cooked for them, and cleaned for them and those were the happiest days of her life.
As they grew up she gave them all that she could. If she couldn't afford it immediately she saved up. She spent hours knitting jerseys, and sold these, to earn more money to attend to their needs. Every cent helped.
She and John had their biggest fights because she spent all her money on the children and not on herself.
"That is the way of a mother..." she used to tell him, and he always just shook his head.
After John died she was alone, but she had no shortages. John had provided enough for her to have a comfortable living.
Both Sylvia and Anthony had been married by that time, but she realized that it was their time now. Their time to build their own families....just like she did once upon a time.
She picked up her knitting and continued. Perhaps she could finish this jersey before they showed today...
It was getting late, and the nurse came to take her back to her room. Reluctantly she stood up, and told the nurse that there was still time and she just wanted to wait a little longer....
The nurse lead her back to her room, assuring her, that tomorrow was another day....
"There is always tomorrow Emily....perhaps they will come tomorrow."
