One popular African saying is that a "Lion cannot give birth to a goat", which means our children must definitely end up with some of our traits or even passion. So you can imagine how proud and excited I was to see my daughters bring this saying to life, dressing up their Barbie doll.
I've always wanted them to develop an interest in sewing, but of course not by force, and we've even had mummy-daughter moment where they watch me draft, cut and make a dress, they also tend to play a lot with my sewing tools, which i sometimes don't like, because I like them using them when supervised, also because, some of these sewing tools can be so little and they get careless with them, only for me to start looking for it at an important moment. Still, I encourage them more.
Yesterday, a friend of mine whom I recently made a dress for, showed up at my place and wanted me to help her shorten the sleeves, the current hot weather made her want a change of sleeve, it wasn't much work, I just put my sciccors through and cut out the length she wanted, and folded the hem while we chatted, not knowing that my daughter found an inspiration in the cut-out sleeves.
She took it into her room and got busy, while me on the other end had forgotten and moved on, I thought she helped trash the cut-out pieces, but the result I saw next brought that mummy-daughter proud moment, my daughter had spent the whole time draping the cut out piece on her doll, no needle, no thread, just her creative mind, yo can imagine how impressed I was when she brought out her doll to show me the ball gown she made. And it is indeed beautiful. Seeing how she can come up with this shows she has indeed been paying attention, and maybe someday she will also be a fashion designer, even better than Mummy.
She didn't stop there. With my guidance this time, she adjusted her design, and we even ended up with a cute bow at the back. It feels amazing to see my child pick up on my interest of passion. I've always loved sewing, and now I'm getting to experience it all over again through my daughter's eyes. This moment is definitely staying with me all life long.
