The scorching heat continues even after the Obon holiday.
Walking during the day feels like getting scorched by the sun or shriveling up from the heat, so I try to walk in the evening whenever possible. Yesterday, I went for a walk with my younger son to an electronics store near the station.
During the Obon holiday, when we visited my parents, my younger son received 5,000 yen as pocket money from his grandpa (my father).
My younger son’s approach to money is a bit unusual. While my older son would immediately spend it on snacks or drinks, my younger son says, “I’m gonna buy stocks” and wants to deposit it into his securities account (lol). Since April this year, he’s been investing 3,000 yen a month through a child’s account.
Of course, I handle the deposits to the securities account and the settings for his mutual fund investments, but I’m genuinely impressed that a first-grader would choose to invest his pocket money rather than spend it on snacks. Growing up, I was the type—like my older son—who turned all my money into snacks, so this feels even more remarkable.
According to my younger son, he’s actually an alien and his real age is 56. I usually laugh off this joke, but sometimes I wonder if it might not be entirely untrue…
This time, however, instead of stocks, he insisted he wanted to buy something specific. And that something was, of all things, a tumbler blender!
Why would a 7-year-old want such a thing? It turns out it’s related to his recent obsession with Nintendo’s Ring Fit Adventure game. He was inspired by the main character, who drinks “smoothies” as recovery items in the game, looking like they’re absolutely delicious. That made him want to make smoothies himself.
I’m not a fan of adding more kitchen appliances, so I’d never buy one myself, but I couldn’t exactly stop my son from using his own pocket money. I observed him for a few days after he mentioned his “desire,” and since his determination didn’t waver, we went to the electronics store together yesterday to buy it.
The Panasonic tumbler blender cost about 6,000 yen including tax. His pocket money fell a bit short, but we had about 1,000 yen in store points, so we used those to complete the purchase.
We also needed ingredients for smoothies, so we stopped by the grocery section in the basement to pick up kiwi, lemons, and komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach) before heading home. Even though the sun was setting, the air was still hot, and the 15-minute walk left us drenched in sweat.
Once we got home, we immediately tried making a smoothie with kiwi and banana, and it was surprisingly delicious! We were in a rush to drink it while it was cold, so I forgot to take a picture of the finished product, which is a shame.
This smoothie lifestyle, sparked by my younger son’s whim, may or may not last, but I’m looking forward to experimenting with different ingredients.

お盆明けも猛暑が続いています。
日中のウォーキングは日差しで焼け焦げるか熱で干からびてしまいそうなので、できるだけ夕方以降に歩くようにしています。昨日は次男と一緒に、駅前の家電量販店まで歩いて出かけました。
お盆に帰省した際、次男はじいじ（私の父）から、5,000円のお小遣いをもらいました。
次男のお金の使い方はちょっと変わっています。長男ならすぐお菓子やジュースに使ってしまうところ、次男は「株買うわ」と言って、証券口座に入金したがるのです（笑）。この4月から、未成年口座で月3,000円の積立投資をしています。
当然、証券口座への入金やら投資信託の積立設定などは私が代行していますが、小学1年生が手元のお小遣いを菓子ではなく投資に回そうと考えるのは、なかなかすごい判断力だなと感心します。私自身、長男と同じく子どもの頃は有り金はすべてお菓子に変えるタイプだったので、なおさらです。
次男曰く、自分の正体は宇宙人で、実年齢は56歳とのこと。普段は笑い飛ばしているこの冗談ですが、あながち嘘ではないのかも… という気がしてきます。
そんな次男ですが、今回は株ではなく、どうしても欲しいものがあると言い出しました。それが、なんとタンブラーミキサー！
なぜ7歳の子どもがそんなものを欲しがるのかというと、最近、次男がハマっている任天堂のゲーム『リングフィットアドベンチャー』が関係しています。ゲーム内で回復アイテムとして登場する「スムージー」を、主人公が美味しそうに飲む姿に影響され、自分でもスムージーを作りたいと思ったようなのです。
私は調理家電を増やすのがあまり好きではないので、自分では絶対に買いませんが、息子が自分のお小遣いで買いたいというのを止めるわけにもいきません。彼が「欲しい」と言い出してから数日様子を見ましたが決意が変わらないようなので、昨日、一緒に家電量販店へ買いに出かけたというわけです。
パナソニックのタンブラーミキサーは税込で約6,000円。お小遣いだけでは少し足りませんでしたが、量販店のポイントが1,000円分ほどあったので、それを使って無事に購入できました。
スムージーの材料も必要なので、地下の食品売り場でキウイ、レモン、小松菜なども買い揃えて帰宅。外は日が暮れかけているのに熱風が吹き、15分ほどの道のりを歩くだけで汗だくになりました。
帰宅後、早速キウイとバナナでスムージーを作ってみたところ、予想以上に美味しくてびっくり！冷たいうちに飲もうと急いでいたので、完成品の写真を撮り忘れてしまい、残念です。
次男の思いつきから始まったスムージー生活、いつまで続くかはわかりませんが、いろいろな素材で試してみるのが楽しみです。
