Today was the elementary school's open class day, and I attended my second son's first-grade Japanese language and art classes.
In the art class, the children made "scratch art." Scratch art is a drawing technique using crayons. First, you fill the drawing paper with your favorite colors. Then, you layer thick black crayon over it, and use a pointed tool like a toothpick or tweezers to scratch the black surface, revealing the colorful layers underneath.
There was this moment when the teacher was demonstrating the scratch art and had colored it with about two colors. It was really just filling in the space with two crayons, but one of the kids shouted, "Teacher, you're so good at this!" Suddenly, applause broke out from the children... I couldn't help but burst out laughing. The teacher seemed totally caught off guard that his simple demo would get such praise and was chuckling in confusion.
First graders are just so adorable. I always thought my second son was pretty calm and gentle for a 7-year-old, but maybe there are a lot of kids like that in this year's first grade — not just him.
This time, it's not scratch art, but I'll share three of my second son's works from the first semester.
The first one is a picture of a fire truck. Apparently, this was a sketch from when a real fire truck actually came to the school. Most kids drew it from a side view, but my second son's is from the back! When you're told to "draw a picture of a car," I doubt many kids would think to draw it from behind . So typical of him 😂
The second and third are coloring pages from right after he started elementary school. If you look closely at the center of the snail's shell, you might spot a pink heart drawn there. I have no idea what was going through his mind when he added that heart, but it somehow made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Elementary school life has only just begun. I hope he has a fun six years ahead.

今日は小学校の授業参観があり、1年生の次男の国語と図工の授業を見学してきました。
図工の授業では、児童たちは「引っ掻き絵」を作りました。「引っ掻き絵」というのは、クレヨンを使った絵描き技法です。まず、画用紙を赤や青などの好きな色で塗りつぶす。その上に黒いクレヨンを厚く塗り重ねてから、爪楊枝やピンセットなどの尖ったもので黒い表面を引っ掻くと、下のカラフルな色が現れる、というものです。
先生が「引っ掻き絵」の見本で、2色ほど色を塗ったときのこと。本当に、ただ2色のクレヨンでスペースを埋めただけだったのですが、児童の一人が「先生、上手ー！」と歓声をあげました。すると、子どもたちの間からパチパチと拍手が起こって・・・私は思わず、笑ってしまいました。先生もまさか、見本を見せて褒められるとは思っていなかったようで、困惑しつつも笑っていました。
1年生、かわいいなぁ。私は次男のことを「7歳にしては落ち着いていて、優しい」と思っていましたが、次男に限らず今年の一年生は同じようなタイプが多いのかもしれません。
今回は「引っ掻き絵」ではありませんが、一学期の次男の作品を3つ紹介します。
一つ目は消防車の絵です。これは実際に、学校に消防車が来たのを写生したものだそうです。多くの子どもは消防車を真横から見た構図で描いていましたが、次男のこれはなんと、後ろから見たものです！「車の絵を描きましょう」と言われて、後ろから描く子はあまりいないのではないでしょうか😅次男らしいです。
二つ目と三つ目は、小学校入学直後の作品で、塗り絵です。カタツムリの殻の中央をよく見ると、ピンク色のハートが描かれているのが見えるでしょうか。次男が何を思ってこのハートを描いたのかは分かりませんが、なんだかあたたかい気持ちになりました。
まだまだ始まったばかりの小学校生活。次男が楽しく6年間を過ごせますように。
