On Tuesday morning I got up and got my post up. Then I got everything ready for when my helper friend arrived at 9:30AM. I got laundry started and kept at it all day. The first thing we did was inventory the butter.
Over the last 4 years, I’ve made good notes on things stored and done inventories, but I never entered them into the notebooks, Food Preservation, and Yearly Food Inventory. It’s a project that’s been sitting on the new desk for years.
So once the butter inventory was done, I had to get info into the notebooks so I could see where I stood.
But before that, my helper friend wanted to get the seedlings into the cold frame. So I selected the ones going and made notes on what moved out while he ferried the trays to the cold frames.
So there are more empty windows again, until Wednesday, the last seed starting.
He came in towards the end and announced there were only 3 spaces left. So I sent out 3 more trays. But when I went out to take photos later, I found he hadn’t kept them close together and there was actually room for 3 more in the second cold frame.
I sent him off on errands one of which was to get these rubber duckies from BuyNothing. My #1 intern has a Jeep and it’s a thing with Jeeps. So these are 2 for her dashboard.
While he was gone, I worked on the food inventory and got it all caught up to date. For butter, I’d had 36 packages in the 2024 inventory, and when we counted on Tuesday, I still had 23. We’d only used 13 packages in the last year. So 23 would hold us until next year when we’d have to make more. The butter is double wrapped/vacuum sealed so it will keep well.
I finished just before he got back. Once the stuff he’d picked up was put away I sat down for a while. Around 2PM I got the kitchen cleaned up and got ready to go with my brother at 3PM to get the new brushcutter.
We took the back way over as it was later afternoon and the start of rush hour. We got the brushcutter, and the important harness. I also got plenty of the special gasoline for it plus extra filters. A hefty chunk of change, all that!
My brother tried it out when we got back, and then took the string reel apart to see how it worked. It works a lot differently than his old weedwacker. He will have to show my son how it works. He also figured out how the harness went on and was impressed with that. So now my son can do the back 40 weedwacking and around the barn and house.
I got some supper made and sat down and read “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” until bedtime. I had to pull the shades because it was going to be borderline cold in the night and no sun and 50’s on Wednesday before it starts raining in the afternoon.
I have 4 trays of seedlings to start on my own on Wednesday. I had my helper friend bring up the 40# soil bag for me. My interns are dealing with the death of their grandfather this week. Once that’s done I have to feed the seedlings. That ought to wipe me out completely.
