Three fence testers

I was up at 4:45AM on Friday morning and got the house closed up against the heat and got ready for more fence repair. My general helper arrived at 6:30AM. She hadn’t slept well due to her 2 hour nap on Thursday afternoon. So neither one of us was moving too fast.

Back 40 - Friday's work area crop August 2025.jpg

We headed out to where we left off on the sandhill on the south side and worked our way around to the north. (Down the right side, across in front of the trees and barn and down the left side.) The weeds were REALLY bad back there on the east side; it was hard to get to the fence. I sure wished my son had gotten the weed wacking done this summer.

But coming up the north side before we got to the tree was even worse. The bear had gone through the fence in 2 places and we couldn’t find the missing 30’ of wire for one or 20’ for the other. I just hope the mower doesn’t find it for us.

We finally made it to the tree line and went back to her picking up downed wood and moving the bucket and me fixing fence, all the way to the downed tree.

Then we moved to the middle pasture and managed to finish the whole north side, including picking up downed wood.

We got our showers and she headed home. My helper friend had arrived at 8AM and he had vacuumed the whole house upstairs and down and washed 3 floors. The house is looking pretty good for this time of year, due to him not being able to be outside.

Once he left, I had lunch and went to bed for 2 hours. It will probably trash my slept Friday night, but I was beyond exhausted.

The peach thief crop August 2025.jpg

I had been sitting at the computer after I got up, editing photos, when I saw a squirrel cross the side yard with a big yellow something in its mouth. I went out and followed it to see what it had, and it was one of my unripe peaches from the Little Trees Contender peach!! So now I know who stole them all last year.

I wouldn’t have thought a squirrel could carry such a load, and he very nearly couldn’t. But he wasn’t giving it up even if I did get really close a couple times. You can only see half of the peach in the photo, it was pretty good sized.

On Saturday my general helper is back early and we plan to finish the 2 front pastures. I hope to see if there’s any peaches left in the Little Trees II and get whatever chokeberries have ripened. I also need to see if there’s enough elderberries to harvest too. She will be a big help doing these jobs as she can squeeze into the small spaces.

My brother said he’d cut up the tree Saturday morning so I have to trek out there 1 more time to fix the fence. Tom is coming to do the foliar spraying early too. I hope to rest Saturday afternoon.
