On Tuesday morning I was up at 4AM and got my post up. I worked on bills/budget for a while then made some breakfast. I sat down for a while then got up to clean up the kitchen and start prepping for making butternut soup. I got laundry started too.

My helper friend arrived at 9:30AM and I sent him on errands while I finished prepping. He got back just when my #1 intern arrived at 10:45AM. She went out to get all our equipment out for cleaning out the Big garden.

I got the shopping put away and left my helper friend starting the soup and headed to the Big garden.

We decided to hit the worst bits first and then go back for the new stuff that had come down from the trees. She started with the walkway and I started where I’d left off on the onion row.

As we were working I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and there was Mr. Bluebird checking out his new house.

I was able to reach 1 side of the cabbages also. I found the first 2 had split from the rain but the 3rd one was still sound. My #1 intern finished the walkway and started down the row where carrots should have been.

There had been calendula at each end of the rows, but only one had survived next to the quince. She cleaned it up and saved the dried seeds for next year.

I made it down to the comfrey and worked down one side. My helper friend appeared and we realized we’d been out there 2 hours. My helper friend keeps a kite in his truck and he got it out to try to fly it in the middle pasture. But the wind was mainly well up in the trees, only occasionally dipping down to freeze us working on the ground. It was VERY windy out there and we were both worn out from that.

So after sitting and watching him try to get the kite up, we quit to warm up and get some lunch of butternut soup. We went back out at 1:15PM to try to finish the clean out.

We got everything except the newly fallen leaves in the area we had previously finished, and the northeast corner where the rhubarb and horseradish are. I left those because I was hoping the new helper would dig out some of the horseradish, back into its designated area.

We had gotten the Gator from the barn when we came back out so she didn’t have to make so many trips to dump totes. It sure saved a lot of time and effort, as that last section was really bad.

We got cleaned up and I got my photos and went inside around 2:45PM when I realized I needed to change over laundry. We sat down for a while and she ended up heading home to do her laundry. We were both so exhausted from the wind.

Nearly full moon behind trees to the northeast

I just sat all afternoon, changing over laundry. My son lit the wood stove and eventually I got the shades pulled, the masonry heater going and supper made. I was in bed at 7:30PM.

On Wednesday I have an appointment in the early afternoon and if my #1 intern is up to it, we will take the truck down with the gas cans and fill them all up. Or maybe we will just rest at our respective homes…
