My Neighbor Totoro / Mi vecino Totoro

--- ---  My friends at Hive!! I confess that I have been a fan of Studio Ghibli films since I was a child, captivated by their beautiful and colorful illustrations and iconic and unique characters. After almost three years away from Hive, today I return with enthusiasm to share summaries and reflections on films that I will be watching or have watched. To start, I'll go with Studio Ghibli films, beginning with “My Neighbor Totoro.” It was the first film I saw from this studio when I was 6 years old, and I fell in love with the story and the ending. The most incredible thing about this film is that at the time, the company was going through a critical moment that threatened to shut it down. At that time, they released the film “My Neighbor Totoro,” which saved Studio Ghibli with its story and through the cultural and economic phenomenon generated by the sale of its merchandise, which made Totoro the icon and symbol of the company, helping to restore its financial health and laying the foundation for the future of the animation studio. Fascinating, really!!  Studio Ghibli Icon. ‎But let's get to the summary. The story begins in 1958, in Japan. University professor Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, move to an old rural residence to be closer to the hospital where the girls' mother, Yasuko, is recovering from a serious illness: tuberculosis. They arrive with their father at their new home, which is an old and apparently haunted house. Upon arrival, they clean and explore the house. Satsuki and Mei discover that it is inhabited by tiny creatures resembling black fluff with eyes. These creatures hide from the girls as they search the house for them. At that moment, the landlady Nani arrives and explains that what they saw were soot spirits called susuwatari, known as small, dark spirits similar to soot that live in abandoned places. Then the girls, Nani, and their father begin to clean and get everything ready and tidy. When the girls and their father feel comfortable in their new home and the susuwatari see that they are good people, they leave the residence.  Mei and the Susuwatari. One morning, Satsuki leaves for school and Mei stays with her father, who is working at home on university matters. Mei starts exploring the garden; where she sees a creature that looks like a white rabbit and another that is blue. She follows them under the house, and when they notice her presence, the creatures start running through the garden and Mei follows them, discovering that they are actually little spirits, who lead her along a path through the forest and then to the hollow of a large camphor tree. There, she meets a creature similar to the ones she was following but larger, who recognizes her and calls her “Totoro.” Becoming friends with a much larger version of the same type of spirit, Mei is surprised and excited, climbing on top of the large creature and stroking its nose. She then falls asleep, and when she wakes up, she finds herself back in the garden of her house.  Mei following the little creatures. When Satsuki and her father find her, she tells them about Totoro and tries to lead them to his hiding place, but despite her many attempts, Mei is unable to show her family Totoro's tree. She becomes upset and sad as she tries to make them believe her. Her father comforts her by telling her that Totoro is the guardian of the forest and that he will show himself when he wants to. Her father takes the girls to the big tree, where they pay their respects, asking him to take care of them and his wife. One day, Satsuki is visited at school by Nani and Mei, who had stayed at home to look after her while Satsuki was at school and her dad was at work. Mei tearfully wanted to stay with Satsuki, and her teacher agreed to let Mei stay in the classroom. Later, in the evening, the girls were at home and saw that their father had forgotten his umbrella. They decided to go to the bus stop to give him the umbrella, as it was raining that night. While waiting, they saw a large creature arrive and stand next to them. They recognized him as Totoro, who was wearing a leaf on his head to keep from getting wet. The girls gave him their father's umbrella, and Totoro, excited to feel the raindrops falling on the umbrella, thanked them with some seeds. Then a cat bus arrived, and Totoro got on and left on the bus. The girls were surprised, and the moment Totoro left on the cat bus, their father arrived. She excitedly tells him that they saw Totoro. Then, one day, Satsuki writes a letter to her mother and tells her everything, including that they planted the seeds Totoro gave them and that Mei always takes care of them. One night, Totoro and the other little creatures do a dance to make the seeds grow, and the girls join them for a fun time. ‎ One day, the girls are at home with Nani, who is looking after them. Kanta, Nani's grandson, tells them that they have a call from the hospital. The girls and Kanta go to take the call, and they are told that their mother must stay in the hospital longer, which upsets the girls to the point that they have an argument, since Mei, being so young, does not understand why her mother has to stay longer, and the two fight and say harsh things to each other. As evening falls, the two girls are lying down in the house when Mei decides to take some corn that Nani gave her to her mother, since Nani said that those who eat her vegetables are healed. The girl went to the hospital. Satsuki leaves and, not finding Mei, tells Nani that everyone in the village is looking for Mei and Satsuki is searching everywhere. Seeing that she is not coming back, she decides to look for Totoro. She goes and wakes him up, asks him to help her find Mei, and starts to cry. Totoro, seeing the situation, helps her, carries her, and takes her to the top of the camphor tree, where Totoro shouts and calls the cat bus, which takes her in search of Mei. He finds her sitting tiredly far from the village. The girls are reunited and get on the cat bus to take the corn to the hospital. Elsewhere, the girls' father is in the hospital talking to his wife, who is doing well, when they see the corn in the window. The mother smiles and tells her husband that she saw the girls climbing the tree in front of their room, which is a very cute scene. In the end, the girls return home on the cat bus. ‎ ‎The film ends, but in the closing credits we see the girls' mother returning to them, reuniting this beautiful family. Without a doubt, one of my favorite and most beautiful stories, highly recommended!! Les confieso que soy mi fan de las películas de Studio Ghibli desde niña, atrapando me con sus ilustraciones hermosas y coloridas, personajes icónicos y únicos. Lo más increíble detrás de esta película es que para ese momento la compañía pasaba por un momento crítico a que los amenazaba a cerrar, para ese momento ellos estrenaron la película "Mi vecino Totoro"  que salvo a Studio Ghibli,  con su historia y a través del fenómeno cultural y económico generado por la venta de su merchandising, que hizo que Totoro se convirtiera en el ícono y el símbolo de la compañía, ayudando a saneamiento económico y sentando las bases para el futuro del estudio de animación. Fascinante la verdad!!!  Ícono de Studio Ghibli. ‎ ‎Pero vamos con el resumen. La historia comienza en 1958, en Japón. El profesor universitario Tatsuo Kusakabe y sus dos hijas, Satsuki y Mei, se mudan a una antigua residencia rural para estar más cerca del hospital donde la madre de las niñas, Yasuko, quien se recupera de una enfermedad fuerte que es tuberculosis. ‎ ‎Ellas con su padre llegan a su nuevo hogar, que es una casa vieja y al parecer embrujada. Al llegar, limpian y exploran la casa, Satsuki y Mei descubren que en ella habitan diminutas criaturas parecidas a una pelusa negra con ojos, estás creaturas se esconden de las niñas que las buscan por toda la casa,en ese momento llega la casera Nani, y les explica que lo que vieron fue a un hollín llamados susuwatari, conocidos como espíritus pequeños, oscuros y similares al hollín que viven en lugares abandonados. Luego acontece que las niñas, Nani y el padre comienzan a limpiar y dejar todo listo y limpio. Cuando las niñas y su padre se sienten cómodos en su nueva casa y los susuwatari observan que son personas buenas, estos abandonan la residencia. ‎  Mei y los Susuwatari. ‎ Un día por la mañana, Satsuki se va a la escuela y Mei se queda con su padre, quien está trabajando en la casa en asuntos de la universidad. Mei se pone a explorar el jardín; en eso observa a una criatura similar a un conejo blanco y la otra de color azul, ella los sigue por debajo de la casa, ellos al darse cuenta de la presencia de la niña, las criaturas empiezan a correr por el jardín y Mei los sigue, descubriendo que en realidad se trata de un pequeños espíritus, que la conducen a través de un camino del bosque y posteriormente hasta el hueco de un gran árbol de alcanfor. Allí, conoce a una creatura igual a las que estaba siguiendo pero más grande quien la reconoce y la llama " Totoro" ,  asiendo se amiga de una versión mucho más grande del mismo tipo de espíritu ,Mei se sorprende y se emociona montándose encima de la gran criatura y acariciando su nariz; en eso ella se queda dormida, y al despertar se encuentra de nuevo en el jardín del patio de su casa.  Mei siguiendo a las pequeñas criaturas. Siendo encontrada por Satsuki y su padre, ella les cuenta y trata de guiarlos al escondite de Totoro, pero a pesar de sus muchos intentos, Mei es incapaz de mostrar el árbol de Totoro a su familia. Ella se molesta y entristece, ya que intenta hacer que le creyeran. Su padre la conforta diciéndole que Totoro es el guardián del bosque y que se dejaría ver cuando él lo quisiera. Su padre lleva a las niñas hasta donde está el grande árbol y allí le dan sus respetos, pidiéndole que cuide de ellos y su esposa. ‎ ‎Un día Satsuki es visitada en la escuela por Nani y Mei quien se había quedado en su casa para cuidarla mientras Satsuki estaba en la escuela y su papá en el trabajo, Mei entre lágrimas quiso quedarse con Satsuki, la maestra de ella accedió a que Mei se quede en la clase. Luego, en la tarde-noche, las niñas estaban en su casa y al ver que su papá olvidó su paraguas, decidieron ir a la parada de autobús para darle el paraguas, ya que esa noche estaba lloviendo. En la espera, ven a una gran criatura que llega y se para al lado de ella siendo reconocido como Totoro, quien llevaba una hoja en la cabeza para no mojarse, las niñas le regalaron el paraguas de su padre y Totoro emocionado al sentir las gotas caer en el paraguas, les agradeció con unas semillas; en eso llegó un autobús felino y Totoro sube y se va en el autobús. Las niñas se quedaron sorprendidas y al instante que Totoro se fue en el autobús felino, llegó su padre; ella se emociona diciendo que vieron a Totoro. ‎ ‎ Luego, un día, Satsuki le escribe una carta a su madre y le cuenta todo, incluso que sembraron las semillas que Totoro les había regalado y que Mei las cuida siempre. Una noche, Totoro con las otras criaturas pequeñas hacen un baile para hacer crecer las semillas y las niñas se unen a ellos en un momento divertido. ‎ ‎Un día las niñas están en casa con Nani, quien las está cuidando, Kanta, el nieto de Nani, les informa que tienen una llamada del hospital. Las niñas y Kanta van para recibir la llamada, les informan que su mamá debe quedarse más tiempo en el hospital, cosa que hace entristecer a las niñas hasta el punto que tienen una discusión, ya que Mei siendo tan pequeña, no entendía el por qué su mamá debía quedarse más tiempo, las dos pelean se dicen cosas fuertes. Al caer la tarde, las dos niñas están acostadas en la casa, en eso a Mei se le ocurre ir a llevarle un maíz a su mamá que le dio Nani; ya que Nani comentó que los que comen sus verduras curaban. La niña se fue al hospital. En eso, Satsuki deserta y al no encontrar a Mei le dice a Nani, todos en el pueblo buscan a Mei y Satsuki busca por todas partes; al ver que no aparece, se le ocurre buscar a Totoro, ella va y lo despierta, le pide que la ayude a buscar a Mei y se pone a llorar. Totoro, viendo la situación, la ayuda, la carga y la lleva a la punta del árbol de alcanfor, donde Totoro grita y llama al autobús felino, quien la lleva en busca de Mei. En eso la encuentra sentada y cansada lejos del pueblo; las niñas se reencuentran y suben al autobús felino para llevar el maíz al hospital. En otro lugar, el padre de las niñas está en el hospital hablando con su esposa, quien se encuentra bien, y en eso ven en la ventana el maíz, la madre le dice a su esposo sonriendo, que al parecer vio a las niñas montadas en el árbol que está frente a su habitación, siendo una escena muy linda. Al final, las niñas regresan a casa en el autobús felino. ‎ ‎Dando por terminada la película, pero en los títulos finales podemos ver cómo la madre de las niñas vuelve con ellas, reuniendo así esta hermosa familia.Sin duda, una de mis historias favoritas y hermosas, muy recomendada!!
