Fall Colors and Lakeside Short Hike

Just this past weekend, I went to central Estonia for a camping trip with my girlfriend. It was an experience to camp in the month of October for sure, but I'm leaving the experience for another post. In this post, I want to show some fall colors and scenes from the lakeside walk we took just before the sun went down.

In the area, there were 3 lakes and we camped right next to one of them. When it was still bright outside, we decided to take a walk along one of the lake's shores. The name of this lake is Pikkjärv. In English it is Longlake, probably because it's the longest one out of these three.

Most of the trees in the area are pine trees and evergreens, but some leafy ones can also be found, which make the scenery more colorful in this season. Here is one very yellow birch.

An overview of the lake. The weather was nice and sunny, which always brings out fall colors more vividly. To be honest, it's difficult to wish for better autumn weather. The evening was relatively warm and almost no wind at all. FRS_8978.jpg

This lake has a lot of hilly landscapes around it, and it's formations are mostly the remnants of the piles of sediment collected by melting glacial ice when the last ice age ended. I'm pretty sure that those lakes used to be glacial melt lakes in ancient history. It's so weird for me to imagine massive glaciers in Estonia. Wish I could somehow see this time and what the place looked like then.

A lot of the areas in this place are very wet and boggy. If you find yourself hiking there, then make sure to wear waterproof hiking boots because you won't make it through otherwise. In some places, you can find the wooden pathways where it's otherwise impossible to walk on.

I found an animal's skull in the tree. Not sure which animal it belongs to, but looking at the shape of the skull, my bet is that it's a moose. There are all kinds of animals in these forests, including bears, wolves, moose and many many other animals.

FRS_8981.jpg Having walked through and explored the nearby landscapes, it was time to turn back because the daylight was fading fast and we still had the tent to erect. Another view of the same lake.

I love it when there is no wind in the forests so when taking landscape shots, the water reflections remain clear. I have been in this area a couple of times before too, but never hiked between those lakes, so it was new for me, and it was interesting to explore a new place for a change. Around this lake, there were 3 more camping spots and I was pretty amazed that people still go camping in October when the weather is pretty cold, especially the nights.

Stay tuned for the post about the camping experience in October. Definitely not like camping in the summer!
