Remembering those forgotten in history.

  In times of globalization and rapid spread of stories. People all around the world try to be very engaged in popular conflicts. People are protesting about conflicts that are ongoing on the other side of the world. They became specialists in Middle Eastern stories and Asian history. But people seem not to care about many other problems that occur around the world. That why I think western education fails. Of course we can't know about all the world's history during school but still we should have a better education to avoid searching for answers on TikTok or X.


  In my previous job, a woman called Dinah worked with me. She told me that she was Egyptian, but she had a cross as a pendant. I never saw that cross; it was different from the regular Catholic cross. I thought she was muslim since all the Egyptians I met since then were muslins. She explained me that the cross was from her religion and she was Coptic. Her family had to exit Egypt because they were facing persecution.

  Coptics are Christians, they descend directly from the ancient Egyptians, yes, those who built the pyramids. Earlier in the year 42 CE, Christianity arrived in Egypt and people started to abandon the old religion with multiple gods. So Christianity was the common religion there until the Arab expansion by the 7th century. Islam started to be spread and the Egyptian DNA started to mix with the Arab conquerors, but still, the remaining Copts who didn't convert are the closest to the ancient Egyptians' genetic profile. They are an ethnical minority nowaday,s with churches often burned and suffering segregation from local communities. Dinah's family was lucky to come to Canada; not many people have that luck.

  Other people suffer around the world, recently we heard about the Druzes in Syriah, but whose of those Middle Eastern specialists heard from the Druzes? Until 2 years ago, here in my town only one Middle Eastern food restaurant.You know those with Shawarma, falafel, etc? The owners had these interesting mustaches, very hairy. They are Druzes. They are part of a group that comes from the Arab, and their religion was born from the Shia branch of Islam. But they aren't considered muslims. Different from many other groups they don't want their national state; they live well and want to serve the country where they are living. For that reason, you will find Druze even in the Israeli army. They are located in Syria, Lebanon and Israel nowadays. They are often targets of radical governments such as the current Syrian leadership since they follow a different religion.


  Those are only two ethnical groups that are forgotten by history and media. The political stability in Syria isn't the best,and you also have a problem with the Kurdish people. So Syria still faces so much violence still, there is an estimation of around 100 thousand undocumented deaths in the last two years in the country related to the conflict. We also have the Yazidis, Armenians, and Mandaeans facing persecution in other parts of Asia. In addition wars that are still taking so many lives that people don't mention. Myanmar, Congo, Ethiopia, Yemen, and even Afghanistan, where the world thinks that the USA solved the Taliban problem there. Maybe we should stop and reflect all that we know is so little right now and try to learn more about the whole, not just some sparks coming from social media.

  Em tempos de globalização e rápida disseminação de histórias, pessoas em todo o mundo tentam se envolver bastante em conflitos populares. As pessoas estão protestando contra conflitos que ocorrem do outro lado do mundo. Elas se tornaram especialistas em histórias do Oriente Médio e da Ásia. Mas as pessoas parecem não se importar com muitos outros problemas que ocorrem ao redor do mundo. É por isso que acho que a educação ocidental falha. Claro que não podemos saber sobre toda a história do mundo durante a escola, mas ainda assim deveríamos ter uma educação melhor para evitar procurar respostas no TikTok ou no X.


  No meu emprego anterior, uma mulher chamada Dinah trabalhava comigo. Ela me disse que era egípcia, mas tinha uma cruz como pingente. Nunca vi aquela cruz; era diferente da cruz católica comum. Pensei que ela fosse muçulmana, já que todos os egípcios que conheci desde então eram muçulmanos. Ela me explicou que a cruz era da religião dela e que ela era copta. Sua família teve que deixar o Egito porque estava enfrentando perseguição.

  Os coptas são cristãos, descendem diretamente dos antigos egípcios, sim, daqueles que construíram as pirâmides. No início do ano 42 d.C., o cristianismo chegou ao Egito e as pessoas começaram a abandonar a antiga religião com múltiplos deuses. Assim, o cristianismo foi a religião comum lá até a expansão árabe no século VII. O islamismo começou a se espalhar e o DNA egípcio começou a se misturar com o dos conquistadores árabes, mas ainda assim, os coptas restantes que não se converteram são os mais próximos do perfil genético dos antigos egípcios. Eles são uma minoria étnica hoje em dia, com igrejas frequentemente incendiadas e sofrendo segregação das comunidades locais. A família de Dinah teve sorte de vir para o Canadá; poucas pessoas têm essa sorte.

  Outras pessoas sofrem ao redor do mundo. Recentemente ouvimos falar dos drusos em Syriah, mas qual desses especialistas em Oriente Médio ouviu falar deles? Até dois anos atrás, aqui na minha cidade, havia apenas um restaurante de comida do Oriente Médio. Sabe aqueles com shawarma, falafel, etc.? Os donos tinham uns bigodes interessantes, bem peludos. Eles são drusos. Fazem parte de um grupo que vem do árabe, e sua religião nasceu do ramo xiita do islamismo. Mas eles não são considerados muçulmanos. Diferentemente de muitos outros grupos, eles não querem um estado nacional; vivem bem e querem servir o país onde vivem. Por essa razão, você encontrará drusos até no exército israelense. Eles estão localizados na Síria, no Líbano e em Israel atualmente. Eles são frequentemente alvos de governos radicais, como o atual líder sírio, por seguirem uma religião diferente.


  Esses são apenas dois grupos étnicos esquecidos pela história e pela mídia. A estabilidade política na Síria não é das melhores, e você também tem um problema com o povo curdo. Portanto, a Síria ainda enfrenta tanta violência que há uma estimativa de cerca de 100 mil mortes sem documentos nos últimos dois anos no país relacionadas ao conflito. Também temos os yazidis, armênios e mandeístas enfrentando perseguição em outras partes da Ásia. Além disso, guerras que ainda ceifam tantas vidas que as pessoas nem mencionam. Mianmar, Congo, Etiópia, Iêmen e até mesmo o Afeganistão, onde o mundo acredita que os EUA resolveram o problema do Talibã. Talvez devêssemos parar e refletir: tudo o que sabemos é tão pouco agora e tentar aprender mais sobre o todo, não apenas sobre algumas faíscas vindas das mídias sociais.
