Certain artificial sweeteners may hamper certain cancer therapies

Sucralose, one of the six approved artificial sweeteners, is 650 times sweeter than table sugar and is widely used for sweetening food and drink. Overall, there are already some health concerns regarding the use of artificial sweeteners, including GI problems, metabolic disturbance, and in some instances, an increased risk of cancer! A new concern has just been added, particularly for sucralose!

Immunotherapy is one of the modern cancer treatment modalities where the therapy educates or influences the immune system to detect and destroy cancer cells. There are a wide variety of cancers, at early stages or in advanced stages, where immunotherapy has proven to be quite effective!

A new study, published in the Cancer Discovery journal, showed that consumption of sucralose reduced the effectiveness of immunotherapy for some cancers. Sucralose disrupts the gut microbiota where certain bacteria destroy arginine, one of the amino acids, required for the effective function of the immune system.
