It's not that Mio didn't put in the effort to mingle with Sumio's family, but their behaviors made it nearly impossible to do so.
It's nothing like what you would expect when you fall in love.
She felt pushed out and isolated on countless occasions, as if she were someone who was unfit to be seen in public with Sumio.
Mio was made a public spectacle at a wedding reception she attended as Sumio's partner, when she was seated far away from him, as if they were strangers.
This is probably what one would describe as being put in the corner. Isolation? Humiliation?
They even gatecrashed the couple's first holiday abroad—a trip they had been granted permission to join, but in a way that left Mio no room to decline.
On what was supposed to be a romantic getaway, she was once again isolated and treated as if she were the third wheel.
There seems to be an unspoken warning to Mio that she would always be the outsider looking in at the best clique.
