Book Review: El Príncipe Cruel – Holly Black 👑📚 (eng/spa)

Me dejé llevar por BookTok, donde pintaban este libro como *súper denso*, cargado de política y con cero romance. Y, claro, con ese panorama, lo fui dejando pasar. Pero entiéndeme… era joven e inmadura (hace apenas un año 🤣). Lo curioso es que ahora decidí leerlo precisamente por todas esas cosas que antes me hacían huir. Te cuento: aunque soy una fan declarada del romance, últimamente me saturé un poco del género, especialmente del contemporáneo. Necesitaba leer algo distinto. Algo que tuviera romance, sí (porque nunca sobra), pero con una trama más profunda que los típicos dramas humanos. Hace poco leí un *Dark Academia* que me voló la cabeza, y me quedé con ganas de más libros así: llenos de intriga, complots, secretos…  [Fuente](https://pin.it/3zNQ85C96) Y así fue como llegué a *El Príncipe Cruel*, el primer libro de la trilogía *Los Habitantes del Aire*, escrito por Holly Black. --- La historia gira en torno a Jude Duarte, una chica humana que, junto a sus hermanas, fue secuestrada del mundo mortal y llevada al Reino de Elfhame, un lugar habitado por hadas, duendes, trasgos, ninfas y todo tipo de criaturas mágicas. A pesar de ser humanas —una raza vista como inferior por las hadas—, las hermanas son criadas en la alta sociedad feérica como hijas legítimas de un general del rey. ¿Por qué? Porque él era el esposo de su madre, quien fingió su muerte y huyó con otro al mundo mortal. Cuando el general los encuentra… bueno, digamos que se cobra la traición con sangre y se lleva a las niñas. Aunque viven rodeadas de lujos, Jude y sus hermanas son constantemente despreciadas por su condición de mortales, ya que la mayoría de los humanos en Faerie son tratados como sirvientes. Jude, sin embargo, no es del tipo que se deja pisotear. Entrenada en estrategia y esgrima, es valiente, ambiciosa e increíblemente astuta. Y por supuesto, no podemos olvidar al príncipe Cardan: su némesis. Cardan es altanero, provocador, y le encanta hacerle la vida imposible a Jude solo por ser humana. Aunque, siendo honesta, más que cruel, me pareció un niño traumado y caprichoso. De hecho, Jude me pareció mucho más cruel y calculadora que él. La historia me encantó. Está llena de personajes moralmente grises, traiciones, asesinatos, secretos y juegos de poder. Vemos cómo Jude evoluciona: de una chica que agacha la cabeza frente a la humillación, a una mujer decidida, que no teme manipular, pelear o traicionar para hacerse un lugar entre los poderosos. Pasa de odiar su lugar en ese mundo de hadas a desearlo con todo su ser. Quiere pertenecer. Pero no como una simple mortal tolerada, sino como una jugadora clave en el tablero político de Faerie. Hay personajes muchísimo más despiadados que Cardan. Jude incluida. El final… ¡ME DEJÓ GRITANDO! Fue impactante. De esos giros que te hacen cerrar el libro en shock y mirar al vacío por unos segundos. I got carried away by BookTok, where they painted this book as *super dense*, politically charged and with zero romance. And, of course, with that outlook, I kept putting it off. But understand me... I was young and immature (barely a year ago 🤣). The funny thing is that now I decided to read it precisely because of all those things that made me run away before. I'll tell you: although I'm an avowed fan of romance, lately I got a bit saturated with the genre, especially contemporary. I needed to read something different. Something that had romance, yes (because there's never too much of it), but with a deeper plot than the typical human dramas. I recently read a *Dark Academia* that blew my mind, and I was left wanting more books like that: full of intrigue, plots, secrets...  [Source](https://pin.it/3zNQ85C96) And that's how I came to *The Cruel Prince*, the first book in *The Inhabitants of the Air* trilogy, written by Holly Black. --- The story revolves around Jude Duarte, a human girl who, along with her sisters, was kidnapped from the mortal world and taken to the Kingdom of Elfhame, a place inhabited by fairies, goblins, goblins, nymphs and all sorts of magical creatures. Despite being human - a race seen as inferior by the fairies - the sisters are raised in high society as the legitimate daughters of a king's general. Why? Because he was the husband of their mother, who faked her death and fled with another to the mortal world. When the general finds them... well, let's just say he takes the betrayal in blood and takes the girls away. Although they live surrounded by luxury, Jude and her sisters are constantly scorned for their mortal status, as most humans in Faerie are treated as servants. Jude, however, is not the type to be trampled upon. Trained in strategy and swordsmanship, she is brave, ambitious and incredibly cunning. And of course, we can't forget Prince Cardan: her nemesis. Cardan is haughty, provocative, and loves to make Jude's life impossible just for being human. Although, being honest, more than cruel, he seemed to me a traumatized and capricious child. In fact, Jude struck me as much more cruel and calculating than him. I loved the story. It is full of morally gray characters, betrayals, murders, secrets and power plays. We see how Jude evolves: from a girl who ducks her head in the face of humiliation, to a determined woman, who is not afraid to manipulate, fight or betray to make a place for herself among the powerful. She goes from hating her place in that fairy world to desiring it with all her being. She wants to belong. But not as a mere tolerated mortal, but as a key player on Faerie's political chessboard. There are far, far more ruthless characters than Cardan. Jude included. The ending...it left me SCREAMING! It was shocking. One of those twists that make you close the book in shock and stare into the void for a few seconds. Seriously, I can't wait to read the second one. **Have you heard of this trilogy?
