Culture is indeed a way of life, it is how people live and connect with one another. The values of a particular group of people are situated in their everyday behavior and beliefs. In other words, culture is not limited to what we eat, wear or celebrate. Culture goes beyond these aforementioned and they are found in the way we relate with people, how we greet our elders, fashion, our mentality as spirituality, the language you speak, storytelling and so many more.

As a Nigerian, from the western part, we are a group of people who do not joke around with their culture, instead we explore our values and beliefs because they represent different beautiful elements. Take for instance, the Yoruba culture is one that is beautifully recognized for the different methods they apply to elevate and portray their culture.

Some of the elements known to the Yoruba cultural traditions are: the act of kneeling down by the women and prostrating by the men as a form of greetings to their elders, the Yoruba traditional culture is known by a particular form of dressing which is the buba and iro in the form of asoke and gele. Additionally, common amongst the Yoruba traditional form of culture is that they are known to use the talking drum as a means to communicate via emotions. When we listen to these traditional drums they have a deeper meaning than the mere sounds you hear on the outer surface.

One thing I love about the Yoruba culture, that makes it a totally different and peculiar culture amongst the three tribes in Nigeria is the manner in which they greet their elders and the respect accorded to people who are older than you through prostration and kneeling. One of the dominant and most common culture in Yoruba land is greeting, it is like an achievement for parents to be able to nurture and train their kids to be respectful of your elders. In essence, the female child is taught to knew down with both knees touching the floor to greet their elders while the male child is taught to prostrate or lie down flat to greet their elders.

The greeting cultural in Yoruba land is unique in a sense than it is not Common among the other tribes, the kneeling and prostrating is peculiar to the yorubas. These forms of greetings are used to greet in the morning, during marriage functions, during festival occasions and so on. Greeting generally is one that should teach values, but the yoruba sees it as something that extends beyond tradition to reflect humility, patience, and honor.

In conclusion, greeting is one of the cultural activities that is not taken for granted in the Yoruba land and it is cherished. No matter your age or how close you are, you must show respect..

This is my participation in the @scifimultiverse community weekly prompt

we want you to tell us what you think culture is all about to you, is there anything else you think culture could mean except from what we already know? What culture do you practice? Your country, tribe or regions might be known with particular cultural activities, so what could that be?
