Strolling Through the Ancient Imperial City of Meknes, Morocco

Hello everyone!

I’m happy to share with you a walk I recently made through the old imperial city of Meknes. This historic city, with its roots going back to the 16th century, is full of charm, hidden corners, and fascinating details that tell the story of Morocco’s glorious past. Through this post, I’d like to take you along with me on this stroll and show you the moments I captured with my camera.

Walking through the old city of Meknes feels like leafing through a living history book. Every alleyway, every wall still carries the marks of centuries gone by, especially the 16th century, when the city thrived under the authority of Moulay Ismaïl. This stroll allowed me to rediscover the quiet yet powerful charm of this imperial city.

Early on, I crossed paths with a familiar gaze: a cat, calmly sitting against a warm orange wall, as if it were guarding the passage of visitors. In these medinas, cats are not just part of the décor, they are silent guardians of the streets. This one seemed to follow me with its eyes, adding a touch of life to the stillness of the ancient stones.

Looking up, the grandeur of the walls was striking. Massive, robust, and proudly standing, they seemed to defy time itself. Their sandy tones blended into the cloudy sky, creating an almost theatrical atmosphere. It was easy to imagine the soldiers who once stood watch here, protecting the city from above. These walls still whisper the power and ambition of the era.

As I walked along the ramparts, I noticed sections of the walls weathered by time, yet beautifully framed by lush vegetation. Yellow and purple flowers bloomed around them, softening the harshness of the stone. The contrast between fragile blossoms and strong walls was striking to me a vivid reminder that life always finds a way to coexist with history.

Further along, I arrived at a monumental statue. What immediately caught my attention were its massive bronze feet, firmly planted on a decorated base, wrapped in intricately detailed sandals. They symbolize strength and grandeur, and when you observe them closely, you almost feel as if the statue is ready to march forward, still alive within the city’s memory.

My walk ended before a majestic wooden door. Its dark wood and iron studs contrasted beautifully with the pale stone surrounding it. The door radiated mystery, as if behind it lay secrets of the imperial past. Doors in Meknes are more than simple entrances, they are gateways to another time. This one, in particular, seemed to whisper stories of a city that refuses to let its history be forgotten.

These moments captured through my lens are more than just visual souvenirs. They reflect the soul of Meknes, a city that has endured through the centuries while keeping its identity intact. All the photos below were taken with my Canon EOS 250D with an 18–55mm lens during this walk.
