Vivir en la singular ciudad ecuatorial de Boa Vista, Roraima, Brasil, me ha permitido observar de cerca su vitalidad cultural. Esta ciudad, estratégicamente ubicada en la triple frontera con Venezuela, las Guayanas y Colombia, destaca por la presencia vibrante de comunidades indígenas. Sus rasgos son inconfundibles y se aprecian en la fisonomía de muchos de sus habitantes, permeando el día a día de la ciudad. > Living in the unique equatorial city of Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil, has allowed me to observe its cultural vitality up close. This city, strategically located on the triple border with Venezuela, the Guianas and Colombia, stands out for the vibrant presence of indigenous communities. Their features are unmistakable and can be seen in the physiognomy of many of its inhabitants, permeating the city's day-to-day life. --- --- --- Pero lo que realmente salta a la vista es la profunda y arraigada cultura física que impregna Boa Vista. Aquí, el deporte no es solo una actividad; es una parte esencial de la vida. Desde las "crianças" (niños) hasta las "garotas" (chicas) y los abuelos, todos se involucran en disciplinas deportivas en plazas, parques y la hermosa Orla de Taumanan. Asistir a una academia es tan fundamental como cumplir con cualquier rito religioso; es, sin duda, una cultura deportiva en su máxima expresión. > But what really stands out is the deep-rooted physical culture that permeates Boa Vista. Here, sport is not just an activity; it is an essential part of life. From the "crianças" (children) to the "garotas" (girls) and grandparents, everyone is involved in sporting disciplines in squares, parks and the beautiful Orla de Taumanan. Attending an academy is as fundamental as fulfilling any religious rite; it is, without a doubt, a sporting culture at its best. --- --- Mi morada está a solo dos cuadras de una "escola de Jiu-Jitsu" llamada The Champions Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Me acerqué para observar una sesión de entrenamiento y, tras pedir permiso al instructor con un gesto marcial, pude capturar la esencia del lugar. La atmósfera de compañerismo y la dedicación de los jóvenes atletas, tanto hombres como mujeres, eran palpables. Practican con óptima voluntad, eficiencia y eficacia, sumergiéndose en la filosofía recreativa del Jiu-Jitsu. ¡Es realmente genial! > My home is only two blocks away from a "escola de Jiu-Jitsu" called The Champions Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I walked over to observe a training session and, after asking the instructor's permission with a martial gesture, I was able to capture the essence of the place. The atmosphere of camaraderie and the dedication of the young athletes, both male and female, was palpable. They practice with optimum willingness, efficiency and effectiveness, immersing themselves in the recreational philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu. Aunque sus raíces son japonesas, su evolución en Sudamérica es fascinante. El Jiu-Jitsu Brasileiro (BJJ) es una adaptación que tomó impulso en Brasil a principios del siglo XX. Mitsuyo Maeda sentó las bases con el Judo, y fue la familia Gracie, en particular Carlos Gracie y sus hermanos, quienes aprendieron y transformaron estas técnicas. Las adaptaron a un estilo más efectivo para el combate real, poniendo un énfasis central en la lucha en el suelo. > I was struck by how this martial discipline is considered an intrinsically Brazilian sport. Although its roots are Japanese, its evolution in South America is fascinating. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is an adaptation that gained momentum in Brazil in the early 20th century. Mitsuyo Maeda laid the foundations with Judo, and it was the Gracie family, in particular Carlos Gracie and his brothers, who learned and transformed these techniques. They adapted them into a more effective style for real combat, with a central emphasis on ground fighting. --- --- El BJJ se distingue precisamente por su enfoque en el combate terrestre, utilizando técnicas de dominio y sumisión a través de palancas y estrangulamientos. Lo más notable es que estas técnicas permiten someter al oponente independientemente de su tamaño o fuerza. Esta particularidad es el sello distintivo de la identidad brasileña del BJJ. > BJJ is distinguished precisely by its focus on ground combat, using techniques of dominance and submission through leverage and chokes. Most notably, these techniques allow the opponent to be subdued regardless of size or strength.
