Last Thursday morning I rolled up at my bi-monthly community centre class to find a bag of green "yuzu" on my table, a gift from one of my students.

"Yuzu" is a small east Asian citrus fruit that is commonly used in dipping sauces (ponzu) in Japan.

My student had picked a whole bunch of yuzu from the trees in her garden and shared them with her classmates and old "sensei."

Well, it was yet another sweltering and humid day and so when I got home I sliced and squeezed the yuzu. Then I filled a glass with ice cubes, poured in some Chilean Cabernet Suavingnon from my local Seven-Eleven convenience store, poured some soda water on top of that, and then added the squeezed yuzu juice. I gave the mixture a good old stir and added some yuzu slices.

Bam! A cool afternoon refresher for Mad Dogs and Englishmen who've just come in from the midday sun.

Actually, I went a bit over the top with the yuzu juice since I'd squeezed and sliced every single yuzu that my student gave me. So the concoction was a bit on the tart side to say the least,

Nevertheless, "white wine yuzu spritzer" is another option for me to add to my growing list of summer afternoon refreshers!
