I’m a Nigerian. The truth is, not everyone is cool with that and I think I understand that. Over the years, my country has been seen a certain kind of way due to our conducts as citizens, and that has proven how much our actions can both tarnish our reputation and also build it. Nigeria as my country isn’t the best in the way we do our things but then, we have our good sides and our bad sides. I’m very sure there are so many people who have an idea that comes to their head the moment my country is mentioned and that’s not completely their fault. I believe we as Nigerians play a major role in that.

According to the hivelearners topic for this 2nd edition, we are asked to talk about **OUR DEAR COUNTRY**. Like I said before, a country isn’t completely judged by all that it has, it is judged by how her citizens make use of what it has. So many times, we forget how much our actions can affect how others who are related to us will be seen. We go about doing whatever we like, however we want to not caring about the consequences it will have on us and others. If there is one good thing I believe my country is known for, it will be the fact that we are resilient.
Of course, there are other good things my country is known for but this is one that anyone who is close to a Nigerian can attest to. We are built in a way that we are always ready to try anything as long as it is profitable. We live in a country where it seems like everything is so hard for us to get and because of that, we are mostly out there looking for ways to make hands meet. There is hardly any place you will go to that you won’t find a Nigerian striving there. Even when it is almost impossible for them to be there. These days, we see that unlike before, Nigerians are gaining access to working some online jobs and I’m sure that’s because they now find us worthy to be there.
They now see how resilient and hardworking we are and that’s why I believe they trust us a little more than before. This is one good thing about my country and I think and believe it’s a fact. It’s something that you don’t need so much to acknowledge. It’s all around you. But then, this might also be where the problem came from. One bad thing my country is known for is that we are fraudulent, sadly. For me, this bad thing is more like the one thing that defines all 99 good. Being fraudulent is evil because it is taking away what someone has worked so hard for without their consent by deceiving them.

Over the years, the youths of my country have grown fond of defrauding people to make a living for themselves. They now see it as a job to do to get money. They are literally everywhere. They want to quickly get out of poverty and live an extravagant lifestyle without working too hard and too long for it. And this action of theirs has destroyed my dear country’s name. Well, our government is not completely out of it as they are also seen as corrupt leaders which is true as well. We have leaders that only care about themselves and their families forgetting almost completely about the people they are to serve.
If these ideas are what you have about my country, then you are right. The truth is, there are still good Nigerians out there but then, it is also true that one bad egg can spoil 9 eggs when put in the same bowl. Sadly, no matter how good some Nigerians will be, a lot of people are still going to have an idea about us and the only thing we can do to change that, is to do the right thing regardless and hopefully, one day they can see us differently.
Thank you for reading through. 💜
