Sometimes a simple filament roll turns into something much bigger, a childhood hero in full glory.

When I started this project, I knew it wouldn’t be just another 3D print. Donatello, the tech genius of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was about to come alive on my desk. The model was printed in PLA from Sunlu, a reliable material that is easy to process afterwards.

For the first time, I tried the Blitz Infill technique. The big advantage: much less material consumption and at the same time a significantly lighter diorama. To my surprise, the support structure was also very easy to remove, definitely a method I will use again in the future.

But the real adventure began afterwards with colors, brushes, airbrush, and a lot of patience.

Als ich dieses Projekt begann, war mir klar: Das wird kein gewöhnlicher 3D-Druck. Donatello, der Tüftler der Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, sollte auf meinem Tisch zum Leben erwachen. Gedruckt wurde das Modell in PLA von Sunlu, einem bewährten Material, das sich gut nachbearbeiten lässt.

Hier probierte ich zum ersten Mal das Blitz-Infill aus. Der große Vorteil: deutlich weniger Materialverbrauch und gleichzeitig ein wesentlich leichteres Diorama. Überraschenderweise ließ sich auch die Stützstruktur sehr leicht lösen, ein echter Pluspunkt, den ich bei künftigen Projekten sicher wieder nutzen werde.

Doch das eigentliche Abenteuer begann erst danach mit Farben, Pinseln, Airbrush und einer Menge Geduld.

🖤 The Raw Print / Der Rohling

The figure came straight from the printer, grey and unpainted. The base with the water tank and pipes already hinted at the urban atmosphere of the Turtles’ world. For priming I tried something new: Chaos Black. Wow, one thin layer was enough to cover everything evenly in matte black. It saved me a lot of time and gave me a perfect base for painting.

Die Figur kam direkt aus dem Drucker, grau und unbemalt. Die Base mit dem Wassertank und den Rohren ließ bereits die urbane Atmosphäre der Turtle-Welt erahnen. Auch hier setzte ich zum ersten Mal eine neue Grundierung ein: Chaos Black. Wow, schon eine dünne Schicht reichte, und alles war gleichmäßig in mattem Schwarz bedeckt. Das sparte enorm viel Zeit und bot eine perfekte Basis zum Bemalen.

🎨 Building the Skin Tones / Aufbau der Hauttöne

I used a mix of Vallejo, Army Painter, and Citadel paints. The skin tones were built up in several airbrush layers. First, I sprayed the entire figure in a very dark green. Then came an olive green from above at an angle of about 70°. Finally, I added a light green-yellow tone from about 30° to emphasize the contrast between light and shadow. Washes and drybrushing added more depth and highlights.

Ich nutzte eine Kombination aus Vallejo, Army Painter und Citadel. Die Hauttöne wurden mit der Airbrush in mehreren Schichten aufgebaut. Zunächst sprühte ich den gesamten Turtle in einem sehr dunklen Grünton ein. Danach folgte von oben ein Olivegrün bei einem Winkel von etwa 70°. Zum Abschluss kam ein heller Grüngelbton bei ca. 30°, um den Kontrast zwischen Licht und Schatten zu betonen. Washes und Trockenbürsten halfen anschließend, zusätzliche Tiefe und Highlights herauszuarbeiten.

🛠️ The Base / Die Base

The water tank and pipes received rust, dirt, and a touch of glowing green ooze. Photos from the US helped me a lot to capture the right atmosphere. The dripping slime from the pipe was not part of the original model, it was my own idea. I created it using resin and fishing line, which made the drops look very realistic. Together with washes and drybrushing, this created the perfect illusion of age and decay, just right for the sewers of New York.

Der Wassertank und die Rohre erhielten Rost, Schmutz und einen Hauch von leuchtendem grünem Schleim. Fotos aus den USA waren mir dabei eine große Hilfe, um die richtige Atmosphäre zu treffen. Der tropfende Schleim aus dem Rohr war übrigens vom Ersteller des Modells gar nicht vorgesehen, das war meine eigene Idee. Gestaltet habe ich ihn mit Resin und Angelsehne, wodurch die Tropfen richtig realistisch wirken. Zusammen mit Washes und Trockenbürsten entstand so der Eindruck von Alter und Verfall, genau passend für die Kanalisation von New York.

🐢 The Final Donatello / Der finale Donatello

With the purple bandana, the bo staff, and the detailed shell, Donatello finally came to life. The combination of airbrush gradients, washes, drybrushing, and brush details turned a grey PLA print into a high-end collectible statue. The before-and-after comparison shows just how much character paint can add to a 3D print.

Mit dem lila Bandana, dem Bo-Stab und dem detaillierten Panzer nahm Donatello schließlich Gestalt an. Die Kombination aus Airbrush-Verläufen, Washes, Trockenbürsten und feinen Pinselarbeiten verwandelte den grauen PLA-Druck in ein Sammlerstück auf hohem Niveau. Der Vergleich von Vorher und Nachher zeigt, wie viel Charakter Farbe einem 3D-Druck verleihen kann.

✨ Conclusion & Next Steps / Fazit & Ausblick

This project once again showed me the potential a 3D print holds when combined with painting techniques. Donatello is finished, but three brothers are still waiting. Will I paint the rest of the Turtles? Space is limited, but the dream of a full TMNT team on display is alive.
