Terminó en la tarde/noche de ayer el tradicional y emotivo match bianual de golf entre equipos de Estados Unidos de América y Europa, la Copa Ryder, de cuya primera ronda escribí un par de días atrás.
Luego de los primeros 2 días, la ventaja del equipo representativo del Viejo Continente se me ocurría indescontable: 11,5 contra 4,5 puntos de los norteamericanos. Un marcador asombroso que no hacía más que reafirmar la superioridad manifiesta en las anteriores ediciones, ya había mencionado que de los últimos 11 enfrentamientos, Europa se quedó con 8.
Solo quedaban 12 matches individuales para el domingo y con tan solo obtener 2,5 puntos los europeos retendrían el título que ostentaban desde Roma 2 años atrás. Como si esto no fuera suficiente ventaja, contaron con una ayuda inesperada: el jugador noruego Viktor Hovland se había lesionado en el cuello el día anterior y una resonancia magnética indicaba que no estaba apto para jugar, por reglamento y atendiendo a la caballerosidad de este juego, el punto se dividiría. Por lo tanto, solo necesitaban 2 puntos para llevarse una vez más el match.

Todo comenzó siguiendo la misma dinámica de los dos días anteriores y el tablero estaba teñido de azul, el color que distingue a los europeos cuando van al frente en un match. Sin embargo, hacia fines de la ronda, cuando el primer match se estaba definiendo, 2 victorias consecutivas de Cameron Young sobre el inglés Justin Rose y de Justin Thomas sobre otro inglés: Tommy Fleetwood envalentonaron al equipo americano que poco a poco revirtió la pizarra virando el color de azul a rojo.
Bryson DeChambeau empató su match luego de ir en desventaja por 5 hoyos y aunque fue una hazaña, le otorgó 1/2 punto a los europeos que se acercaban, lentamente, al objetivo de retener el título. El número 1 del mundo, Scottie Scheffler, se reivindicó luego de 4 derrotas en los foursome y fourball de los días viernes y sábado y le ganó al número 2 del mundo, el irlandés Rory McIlroy. Las ilusiones se apagaron cuando en el siguiente match Patrick Cantlay perdió frente al joven sueco Ludvig Åberg, en ese momento Europa solo necesitaba 1/2 punto para ganar y lo más importante es que le ponía paños fríos a la arremetida norteamericana.
Sin embargo la marea roja continuaba, Xander Schauffele le ganó al español Jon Rahm y J.J. Spaun hizo lo propio con el austríaco Sepp Straka, 5,5 puntos de Norteamérica contra tan solo 1,5 de Europa, pero el milagro terminó unos minutos después, el irlandés Shane Lowry empató su match con Russell Henley y el 1/2 punto deseado finalmente llegaba, Europa retenía la Ryder Cup.
Una victoria más para USA y 3 empates sellaron el marcador definitivo de 15 puntos para Europa y 13 para USA, los europeos felices por el triunfo y los americanos satisfechos por haber revertido una situación que se parecía a una paliza monumental.

Un final apasionante e inesperado tanto para los jugadores como para los medios especializados, también para el público presente que finalmente pudo alentar y vivar a sus jugadores luego de más de 2 días completos donde la angustia y el desgano provocados por los scores adversos les habían quitado toda ilusión.
Gran match, quedé con ganas de volver a ver uno así pronto. Será recién en 2027 en Irlanda, en un club hermoso cuyas imágenes me provocaron la ilusión de asistir. Soñar no cuesta nada.

#### Almost a miracle
The traditional and emotional biannual golf match between teams from the United States of America and Europe, the Ryder Cup, concluded yesterday afternoon/evening. I wrote about the first round of the match a couple of days ago.
After the first two days, the advantage of the European team's representative team seemed incontrovertible: 11.5 points to 4.5 for the Americans. A stunning score that only reaffirmed the evident superiority of previous editions. I had already mentioned that of the last 11 matches, Europe had taken 8.
Only 12 individual matches remained until Sunday, and with just 2.5 points, the Europeans would retain the title they had held since Rome two years ago. As if this weren't enough of an advantage, they had unexpected help: Norwegian player Viktor Hovland had injured his neck the day before, and an MRI indicated he was unfit to play. According to the rules and in keeping with the fairness of this game, the point would be split. Therefore, they only needed two points to win the match once again.
It all started in the same way as the previous two days, with the scoreboard colored blue, the color that distinguishes the Europeans when they are ahead in a match. However, towards the end of the round, when the first match was being decided, two consecutive victories by Cameron Young over Englishman Justin Rose and by Justin Thomas over another Englishman, Tommy Fleetwood, emboldened the American team, who gradually turned the scoreboard from blue to red.
Bryson DeChambeau tied his match after trailing by five holes, and although it was a feat, it conceded a half-point to the Europeans, who were slowly edging closer to their goal of retaining their title. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler redeemed himself after four losses in the foursomes and fourballs on Friday and Saturday by defeating world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, the Irishman. His hopes were dashed when Patrick Cantlay lost to young Swede Ludvig Åberg in the next match. At that point, Europe only needed a half-point to win, and more importantly, it was putting a damper on the American onslaught.

An exciting and unexpected ending for both the players and the specialized media, as well as for the spectators present, who were finally able to cheer on and experience their players after more than two full days where the anguish and discouragement caused by adverse scores had robbed them of all hope.
A great match! I'm looking forward to seeing one like this again soon. It won't be until 2027 in Ireland, at a beautiful club whose images made me want to attend. Dreaming costs nothing.
