El jueves pasado comenzó un nuevo torneo de la NFL, la liga de futball americano más famosa del mundo, prácticamente la única en realidad porque aun no han sido capaces de despertar grandes emociones fuera de los Estados Unidos, pese a los esfuerzos por impulsar una liga en Europa y jugar cada temporada algunos encuentros fuera del gran país del Norte de América.
Sin embargo, algo curioso sucede con este deporte: es seguido con gran interés por muchos aficionados, incluso aquí en Sudamérica, y posee una buena cobertura de medios periodísticos en todo el mundo. El famoso Super Bowl, el encuentro final de la temporada que define al nuevo campeón, es visto por millones de espectadores en todo el orbe y donde un segundo de publicidad en ese encuentro se vende por millones, bastante más de lo que la mayoría de los seres humanos necesitan para vivir toda su existencia.
Pero practicarlo es otra cosa, existen algunas ligas en nuestros países de una variante denominada "de banderín" que no necesita de esos aparatosos equipos deportivos llenos de defensas para el cuerpo y la cabeza tan necesarios en este rudo deporte. Es más tranquilo y difiere bastante del original, quizás sea por ello que no ha "prendido".

Como es habitual en el inicio de cada temporada, el kickoff o primer encuentro del torneo se disputa un día jueves por la noche y en el mismo participa el campeón vigente. Este año le tocó ese honor de inaugurar el torneo a Philadelphia Eagles y su rival de turno fue Dallas Cowboys, el equipo económicamente hablando más valioso, no solo de la NFL sino de todos los clubes deportivos del mundo. Poco tiempo atrás hice una publicación sobre esta cuestión.
Ganaron los campeones actuales por 24 a 20 en un partido cerrado y muy disputado que no pude apreciar en su totalidad debido a que ese mismo día jugaba la selección argentina de fútbol frente a Venezuela por las eliminatorias para el mundial 2026, nuestro país ya estaba clasificado pero era la despedida de Messi en un encuentro como local por el torneo clasificatorio para el mundial, imposible perdérmelo.
Por lo tanto, no puedo dar demasiados detalles de este duelo entre equipos de la división este de la conferencia nacional, muy importante, tanto por el debut triunfal del campeón como por la rivalidad divisional. Dallas es un equipo que brilló en el pasado pero que en los últimos años ha estado alternando buenas y malas sin lograr un conjunto totalmente competitivo. Este año no comenzaron con las mejores sensaciones, veremos si se recuperan.

El segundo encuentro se disputó el viernes 5/9 en la ciudad brasileña de San Pablo como parte del programa de difusión y apertura que incluye varios matches fuera del territorio americano. Allí tuvimos la primera sorpresa de la jornada: los Chiefs de Kansas City, equipo dominante de los últimos años y subcampeón del torneo anterior, cayeron ante Los Ángeles Chargers por 27 a 21. Tampoco vi este partido por compromisos familiares.
En el día de hoy se desarrollarán la gran mayoría de los encuentros programados en sus dos horarios habituales más el cierre en la noche, el conocido "Sunday Night Footbol"; solo un encuentro quedará pendiente y como es habitual se disputará mañana por la noche en el también famoso "Monday Night Football", que cerrará la primera fecha de 18 que componen la temporada regular. Los protagonistas de este último encuentro de la fecha serán Chicago Bears y Minnesota Vikings.
Esto recién comienza y el objetivo de todos es llegar al Super Bowl número 60 que se disputará el domingo 8 de febrero de 2026 entre los campeones de ambas conferencias en las que se divide la liga. El Super Bowl se disputará en la casa de los San Francisco 49ers, el Levi’s Stadium, ubicado en Santa Clara, California, estadio que tendrá el honor por segunda vez de ser sede del gran encuentro final.

Si bien todavía no hay confirmados, se especula que el también famoso espectáculo del medio tiempo podría incluir artistas de la talla de Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Metallica y Justin Bieber, en los últimos días ha surgido el rumor sobre que Robbie Williams podría estar presente, todas son especulaciones y nada hay de cierto, al igual que los dos equipos que disputarán la gran final.
Este espectáculo recién comienza, como siempre espero que los Bengals de Cincinnati estén ahí, veremos si los hados nos son propicios.
