The maize harvest process

It’s the season for harvest, and of course, we’re not left out of the excitement and hard work that comes with it. The corn in our farm has begun to dry up, showing signs that it's almost ready to be harvested. But even before we could plan the perfect harvest day, the farm had already started facing its own battles.

The herdsmen had started making their way through the farm, troubling the peace of the drying corn. And as if that wasn’t enough, we also noticed that some people had been sneaking into the farm to steal. It was clear the corn wasn’t being allowed to rest. So, after some thought, we decided that instead of waiting any longer and risking further loss, it was best to go ahead and begin harvesting, after all, the corn was already drying up.

We arrived at the farm, but what we saw left us speechless. Right at the middle of the farm, it was as if someone had already carried out a full-scale harvest. That section was completely empty, clearly cleared out, likely by the thieves who had helped themselves earlier. It was disappointing, but there was no time to dwell on it. We had to move fast and save what was left.

Everyone got to work immediately. Some people were pulling the maize from the stalks, others were peeling off the husks, and thankfully, we had our engine running, helping to remove the maize seeds from the cobs to save time and energy. Everything was going smoothly for a while, and we were making great progress.

But, as expected with farm work, things rarely stay perfect for long. At some point, the engine developed a fault and stopped working. That slowed us down completely. We didn’t want to leave the maize there, so we all tried to continue manually, using our hands to remove the seeds one after the other, trying to imitate what the engine had been doing. It wasn’t easy. Our fingers began to hurt, and with the sun rising high, everyone was getting tired quickly.

Eventually, we had no choice but to gather all the remaining maize and bring them home to continue the work. We were exhausted, sweaty, and worn out, but grateful for the much we were able to salvage. It wasn’t an easy day at all, but at least the harvest had started, and we’re hopeful the rest will go well.
