My Maiden Voyage! Great Blue Herons of Lower Delaware Hey everyone! Welcome to my new bird watching blog, "Flying Friends"! I'm incredibly excited to share my first real entry with you all, as this truly feels like my maiden voyage into the captivating world of birding. It's one thing to spot a robin in your yard, but it's another entirely to actively go out and seek these amazing creatures.
Today I was absolutely thrilled by what I found here in Lower Delaware. My target for the day (though I didn't know it when I set out!) turned out to be the magnificent Great Blue Heron. These birds are just incredible to watch – so tall, so graceful, and yet they can stand so perfectly still, like living statues, patiently waiting for their prey.
It was such a rewarding experience to not only spot them but also manage to snap a few pictures. As a new birder (and photographer!), every successful shot feels like a huge win. They might not be perfect, but they represent the sheer joy and wonder of these moments.
Here are a few of my favorite shots from today:
As I continue this birding journey in Lower Delaware, I'm constantly reminded of the incredible diversity we have right here. The Great Blue Heron is definitely one of our local stars, along with other common sightings like Northern Cardinals, Mourning Doves, American Robins, Blue Jays, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-winged Blackbirds, and various Gulls OR even A PAIR of BALD EAGLES!
What a start to this adventure! I'd love to hear about your own "maiden voyages" into bird watching, or if you have any favorite Great Blue Heron stories. Drop them in the comments below! Happy birding, and stay tuned for more feathered encounters!
