English Version

Today I had a meeting at the hospital, one of those dictated by an agenda and the clock. Before going in, a fellow surgeon invited me to have some coffee. Although I must confess I’m not a fan of the mild coffee they sell at the kiosks, the idea of stepping out for a bit, stretching my legs, and having a chat sounded far too tempting to refuse.

So we went from kiosk to kiosk, searching for that coffee that would truly wake us up… but none of them had it. The walk turned into a small coffee expedition, until we finally ended up at the little café outside the hospital. I won’t lie—my hopes of finding a good coffee were almost nonexistent. In my mind, I was already resigned to drinking something soulless, just out of politeness.

We ordered two espressos. The aroma was the first sign that maybe I was wrong. And yes, at the very first sip I realized I had completely underestimated the place: it was the best espresso I had had in a very long time! Intense, aromatic, with just the right bitterness that caresses the palate. I, who am always on the eternal quest for the best coffee in my city, had found it in the last place I would have thought to look. We stayed there, talking, laughing, and letting time slip away between slow sips. It was one of those simple yet perfect moments, where coffee is not just coffee—it’s an excuse to disconnect, to share, and to be surprised.

When the meeting was over and I was still savoring that wonderful taste, my colleague and friend, the urologist, showed up unexpectedly. Without a second thought, I pulled her along with me to that little café, determined that she should try the gem we had discovered. Between chatter and laughter, I placed a steaming cup in front of her… and it only took seeing her close her eyes at the very first sip to know we agreed: that coffee was worth repeating.

Sometimes, the best things come without looking so hard… and they’re served in a small cup.
