Prayer is something we often talk about, in the Christian cycles but it’s rarely done especially at an individual level, it is easier said than done. Today in most parts of Africa people are perceived to be prayerful, however the practice is done in a wrong way. What do I mean; the so called prayer today is not in line with what scripture says. In Matthew chapter 6 the disciples are taught how to rightly pray but, before Jesus spoke about the right way of how prayer is supposed to be conducted. He began by talking about things that are wrongly done in regard to prayer. He tells them not to be like “charlatans who stand in church builds and street corners for them to be noticed by people that they are really devoted to prayer”. Nowadays with the coming of social media, the practice of showing off in public that one can pray has become so common. People today can be in prayer and fasting while taking pictures and videos of themselves. Some even display the number of days they have spent in prayer or even go live and mention the days covered on the mountain in prayer and fasting. This is the modern day hypocrisy and a number of people think this is the right way of doing it yet scripture is against it. The Bible is blunt on a number of issues pertaining to life and godliness though many of us don’t study and do what it says. Jesus gives a clear picture of a correct way of engaging in prayer, he says “when praying we should go into a private space or room and shut the door. God our father who sees in secret shall reward us”. Many times we long to be in public places and make names for ourselves. Nonetheless what is fame without having a true relationship with our creator through Jesus? Let us seek to please Yahweh who see in secrete and rewards those that diligently seek him. He rewards us both in this time and after our journey on this earth ends. Remember earthly rewards are temporal but spiritual ones are for eternity. Be encouraged to practice biblical prayer not what we hear or see from self proclaimed prophet or spiritual leaders in the Christian faith.
