Albear Park: the key to Old Havana [eng/spa]

One of the busiest and best known streets in Old Havana is Obispo. This street is traveled by thousands of people every day, but in addition to all the interesting places that make it up, it has the peculiarity of having, right at its entrance, the well-known Albear Park. To be exact, this work stands on Monserrate Street, between Obispo and O'Reilly. This site has a very special meaning, since it is dedicated to the figure of Francisco de Albear y Lara, who was one of the best known engineers in the history of Cuba for the architectural legacy he left for future generations.

Esta es transitada por miles de personas cada día, pero además de todos los lugares interesantes que la integran, tiene la peculiaridad de poseer, justo en su entrada, el muy conocido parque de Albear. Para ser exactos, esta obra se erige en la calle Monserrate, entre Obispo y O'Reilly. Este sitio tiene un significado muy especial, ya que está dedicado a la figura de Francisco de Albear y Lara, quien fuera uno de los ingenieros más conocidos en la historia de Cuba por el legado arquitectónico que dejó para las futuras generaciones.*

I tell you that Albear was the person who designed the most impressive aqueduct built in the country up to that time, which is also considered one of the 7 wonders of Cuban engineering, and was even awarded for technical and aesthetic excellence in Paris. This water supply source, known by all as the Albear Aqueduct in homage to its creator, in addition to its technical attributes, arrived at a time when the inhabitants of the city were suffering a very critical situation due to the scarcity of the liquid, so at a utilitarian level it constituted a positive element that is still used today. The monument is built in white Carrara marble, and is surrounded by a white metal fence, which also protects the planted flower beds that adorn the whole. Its author was the Cuban sculptor José de Villalta y Saavedra.

> *Les comento que Albear fue la persona que diseñó el acueducto más impresionante construido en el país hasta ese momento, que además es considerado una de las 7 maravillas de la ingeniería cubana, y que incluso fue laureado por la excelencia técnica y estética en París. Esta fuente de abastecimiento de agua, conocido por todos como Acueducto de Albear en homenaje a su creador, además de sus atributos técnicos, llegó en un momento en el que los habitantes de la ciudad sufrían una situación muy crítica por la escasez del líquido, así que a nivel utilitario constituyó un elemento positivo que es usado aún en la actualidad. El monumento está construido en mármol blanco de Carrara, y está circundado por un cercado de metal de color blanco, que protege además los canteros sembrados que adornan el conjunto. Su autor fue el escultor cubano José de Villalta y Saavedra.*

The monument highlights the figure of Albear, which occupies the highest point of the complex and was built in natural size. The engineer, who also had military knowledge, wears a uniform. From my perception, his pose, although serene, suggests a moment of introspection and reflection as he observes the notebook he holds in one of his hands. One of his feet even protrudes from the tray, which offers the idea of movement, that he will continue on his way. In the lower part of the sculptural group, there is the figure of a woman with a raised hand, representing Havana. The dedication made to the figure of Albear, who is considered one of the illustrious sons of the city, can be seen on the plaque. The story goes that after Albear's death, the work was inaugurated a short time later. It is really a pity that he was not able to enjoy such a heartfelt tribute.

> *El monumento resalta la figura de Albear, que ocupa el punto más alto del conjunto y fue construido en tamaño natural. El ingeniero, quien además tenía conocimientos militares, viste un uniforme. Desde mi percepción, su pose, aunque serena, sugiere un momento de introspección y reflexión cuando observa el cuaderno que sostiene en una de sus manos. Incluso, uno de sus pies sobresale de la tarja, lo que ofrece la idea de movimiento, de que seguirá su camino. En la parte inferior del conjunto escultórico, se observa la figura de una mujer que posee una mano alzada, y representa a La Habana. En la tarja se observa la dedicatoria realizada a la figura de Albear, que según refiere es considero uno de los hijos ilustres de la ciudad. La historia señala que luego de la muerte de Albear, se inauguró la obra poco tiempo después. Realmente es una pena que no haya podido disfrutar de tan sentido homenaje.*

Albear's park, in addition to its unbeatable location, is surrounded by excellent places. One of them is the internationally renowned bar El Floridita, which is the best establishment in Havana to enjoy a good Daiquiri. Another of its most elegant neighbors is the National Museum of Fine Arts, and the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski.
