One of the most central, busy and well-known places in Havana is the Central Park. This is a point of reference for all the capital's inhabitants, and a meeting and recreation point for passers-by.
This fascinating space is located at the confluence of Prado, Zulueta, Neptuno and San José streets. It is a place of easy access from any municipality of the city, and also constitutes an obligatory stop for the tourist buses that move throughout the capital.

The Central Park also has the advantage of being surrounded by buildings with fascinating architecture, and that a few meters away begins Obispo Street, which is an extremely busy and visited area for sightseeing. Around the park are the hotels Inglaterra, Telégrafo, Parque Central and Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski, which gives it a plus considering the convenience of having so many lodging options.
For art lovers, very close to the park is the National Museum of Fine Arts, which is one of the places where works of high artistic sensitivity and elegance are exhibited. Although of all these sites surrounding the park, the facade of the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso, is for me the most impressive.

Its central point is the sculpture erected in honor of José Martí, also known as the Apostle, which is also the first one erected in his name in the country. This was a work of the Cuban sculptor José Villalta de Saavedra.
But as I like to know and share the history of places, I tell you that the construction of the park was completed after the demolition of the walls that protected the city in the nineteenth century, only that at that time there was not as much presence of trees as today. Years later, the royal palms that exist today were incorporated, which are exactly 28 in honor of the fact that Martí was born precisely on January 28th, and is one of the most transcendental figures in the history of Cuba. In fact, the fact that they are precisely royal palms gives the park a greater symbolism, since this is the national tree of Cuba.

Pero como me gusta conocer y compartir la historia de los lugares, les cuento que la construcción del parque estuvo concluida luego del derribo de las murallas que protegían la ciudad en el siglo XIX, solo que en aquel momento no había tanta presencia de árboles como en la actualidad. Años más tarde es que se incorporan las palmas reales que hoy existen, que son exactamente 28 en honor a que Martí nació justamente un 28 de enero, y es una de las figuras más trascendentales en la historia de Cuba. Incluso, el hecho de que sean precisamente palmas reales le ofrece al parque un simbolismo mayor, ya que este es el árbol nacional de Cuba.*
As a curious fact, I tell you that before the erection of the sculptural group of Martí, initially the statue that was located in the center of the park was that of the Queen of Spain Isabel II. Years later, when the neo-colonial republic was established, it was removed and replaced by a replica of the statue of Liberty, which was destroyed by a cyclone.
There are also 8 flowerbeds, which symbolically represent the tombs of the medical students who were unjustly shot in November 1871, a fact that is part of one of the saddest pages of the history of Cuba.
> *Como dato curioso, les cuento que antes erigirse el conjunto escultórico de Martí, inicialmente la estatua que se ubicaba en el centro del parque era la de la reina de España Isabel II. Años más tarde, cuando se instauró la república neocolonial, se retiró esta, poniendo en su lugar una réplica de la estatua de La Libertad, la cual quedó destruida luego de los embates de un ciclón.
Existen además 8 canteros, que representan de forma simbólica las tumbas de los estudiantes de medicina que fueron injustamente fusilados en noviembre de 1871, hecho que forma parte de una de las páginas más tristes de la historia de Cuba.*
