Getting to know a fountain that gives its name to Havana [eng/spa]

Today I had a pretty intense morning, I had several pending work to accomplish at certain times, so the first hours, although productive, were a little tense. Fortunately everything went well, but when I finished I needed to do some activity that would be relaxing, so without thinking too much, I went for a walk accompanied by the camera of my cell phone. On my walk, I decided to go to the India Park. I walked through the area located south of Paseo del Prado, and I was ecstatic with all the movement of that area and the energy that is breathed there. I confess that usually, when I am in that area, my sight is lost in the facade of the Capitol, which is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular and iconic buildings we have in Cuba. But this time I wanted to enjoy a different scene, and so I did.

> *Hoy tuve una mañana bastante intensa, tenía varios pendientes de trabajo que debía cumplir en determinados horarios, así que las primeras horas, aunque productivas, fueron un poco tensas. Afortunadamente todo salió bien, pero al terminar necesitaba hacer alguna actividad que me resultara relajante, así que sin pensar demasiado, salí a caminar acompañada de la cámara de mi celular. En mi andar, decidí llegar hasta el parque de la India. Caminé por la zona ubicada más al sur del Paseo del Prado, y quedé extasiada con todo el movimiento de esa zona y la energía que allí se respira. Confieso que por lo general, cuando estoy en esa área, mi vista se pierde en la fachada del Capitolio, que sin dudas es de las edificaciones más espectaculares e icónicas que tenemos en Cuba. Pero esta vez quería disfrutar de una escena diferente, y así lo hice.*

India Park has a privileged location, as one of its closest neighbors is Fraternity Park, which is a place visited by thousands and thousands of people every day, as it is a point of confluence of public transport for several municipalities of the city. India Park is located right in front of the Saratoga Hotel, a place that still evokes much sensitivity for all the Cuban people, after its explosion about 3 years ago. The park owes its name to the fountain located right in its center, known as the Fountain of India or Noble Havana.

> *El parque de la India tiene una ubicación privilegiada, pues uno de sus vecinos más cercanos es el parque de la Fraternidad, que es un lugar transitado por miles y miles de personas cada día, pues constituye un punto de confluencia del transporte público para varios municipios de la ciudad. El parque de la India queda ubicado justo en frente del hotel Saratoga, lugar que evoca aún mucha sensibilidad para todo el pueblo cubano, luego de su explosión hace ya unos 3 años. El parque debe su nombre a la fuente que queda ubicada justo en su centro, conocida como la Fuente de la India o de la Noble Habana.*

I find this sculptural ensemble very interesting. Whenever I see it, it reminds me of one of my history professors when I was a student, who used to say that the fountain was a representation of the history of Havana. The work is made of white Carrara marble, and its main element is the figure of a seated woman, who in one of her hands is seen holding a horn of plenty. Her hair, on the other hand, is adorned with a crown of feathers. The woman is surrounded by four dolphins, and it is through their mouths that water flows from the fountain. At the time of my visit, the fountain was not in operation, but as I have been there on other occasions, I know its mechanism.

> *Este conjunto escultórico me parece muy interesante, incluso siempre que lo veo me recuerda a uno de mis profesores de historia de mi etapa de estudiante, que solía decir que la fuente era una representación de la historia de La Habana. La obra está elaborada en mármol blanco de Carrara, y su principal elemento es la figura de una mujer sentada, que en una de sus manos se ve sosteniendo un cuerno de la abundancia. Por otra parte, su cabello, se ve adornado con una corona de plumas. La mujer está rodeada de cuatro delfines, y por sus bocas es que brota el agua de la fuente. En el momento de mi visita, esta no se encontraba en funcionamiento, pero como he estado en ese el lugar en otras ocasiones, conozco su mecanismo.*

The history that hides this set is very nice. The woman in the fountain represents the Indian called Habana, who was the wife of the cacique Habaguanex, who was the highest authority in the region before the arrival of Christopher Columbus to Cuba. It is popularly said that this is the origin of the city's name. But this is not the only interesting element of this source. Some scholars of the history of the city refer that the fountain was the first image captured in a photograph in Havana; and also the work, before having its current location, was located in other places.

> *La historia que esconde este conjunto es muy bonita. La mujer que protagoniza la fuente representa a la india llamada Habana, quien fuera esposa del cacique Habaguanex, que constituía la máxima autoridad de la región antes de la llegada de Cristóbal Colón a Cuba. Se dice popularmente que a ello se debe el nombre de Ia ciudad. Pero este no es el único elemento interesante de esta fuente. Algunos estudiosos de la historia de la ciudad refieren que la fuente fue la primera imagen captada en una fotografía en La Habana; y además la obra, antes de tener su actual ubicación, estuvo localizada en otros sitios.*

Undoubtedly, India Park is one of the places to visit in Havana. If you walk near it, do not miss the opportunity to enjoy its fountain.
