Looking up in Havana [eng/spa]

One of the most striking monuments in the city of Havana is located very close to Havana's Malecon, and is dedicated to General Maximo Gomez Baez. Whenever I look at it, I feel that to really appreciate its majesty, you have to look up, to its highest point, so I invite you to visit it to see if you will experience the same sensation.  I have visited this site on several occasions, because I really like its architectural design and the level of detail that each part of its structure has, but before reaching this place, I allow myself to walk near the sea, and relax with the view it offers. 

> *Uno de los monumentos más llamativos de la ciudad de La Habana se encuentra ubicado muy cerca del Malecón habanero, y está dedicado al General Máximo Gómez Báez. Siempre que lo observo, siento que para apreciar realmente su majestuosidad, hay que mirar hacia arriba, hacia su punto más alto, así que los invito a visitarlo para saber si experimentarán la misma sensación.  He visitado este sitio en varias ocasiones, porque me gusta mucho su diseño arquitectónico y el nivel de detalle que posee cada parte de su estructura, pero antes de llegar hasta ese lugar, me permito caminar cerca del mar, y relajarme con la vista que ofrece.*

This monumental complex is the work of Italian artist Aldo Gamba and was inaugurated some 90 years ago. Formerly the park that surrounded it was much larger, but when the construction of the Havana tunnel began, this space was reduced. I imagine how impressive it must have been back then, because despite this intervention, it is still quite extensive. In fact, in this place it is common to find the neighbors of the area practicing physical exercises, because the extension of the esplanade is excellent for that kind of activities. The location of the complex is invaluable, because very close to it are other places of tourist interest.  To mention a few, from the monument you can walk to the Castle of San Salvador de la Punta; the March 13 Square and the equestrian monument dedicated to José Martí; the Paseo del Prado and Iberostar Grand Packard hotels; the popular Paseo del Prado and the monument built in honor of the 8 medical students.

> *Este conjunto monumental es una obra del artista italiano Aldo Gamba, y fue inaugurado hace unos 90 años. Antiguamente el parque que lo circundaba era mucho más amplio, pero cuando se comenzó la construcción del túnel de La Habana, este espacio se vio reducido. Imagino lo impresionante que debió ser en aquel entonces, porque a pesar de esta intervención, sigue siendo bastante extenso. De hecho, en este lugar es frecuente encontrar a los vecinos de la zona practicando ejercicios físicos, pues la extensión de la explanada es excelente para ese tipo de actividades. La ubicación del conjunto es invaluable, pues muy cercano a este se encuentran otros lugares de interés turístico.  Por mencionar algunos, desde el monumento se puede llegar caminando hasta el Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta; la Plaza 13 de marzo y el monumento ecuestre dedicado a José Martí; los hoteles Paseo del Prado e Iberostar Grand Packard; el popular Paseo del Prado y el monumento construido en honor a los 8 estudiantes de medicina.*

In addition to the places that surround it, getting to this site from any point in the city is also easy, since it is located in one of the most central and busiest municipalities. However, it is important to mention that to access the monument you must be very careful, especially if you visit it accompanied by children, because as I said before, it is surrounded by the tunnel, which means that a large number of cars are constantly circulating through this area at high speeds.

> *Además de los lugares que lo rodean, llegar a este sitio desde cualquier punto de la ciudad también es sencillo, pues está ubicado en uno de los municipios más céntricos y transitados. No obstante, es importante comentarles que para acceder hasta el monumento se debe ser muy cuidadoso, sobre todo si lo visitan acompañados por niños, ya que como dije anteriormente se encuentra rodeado por el túnel, lo que implica que constantemente circulan por esa zona gran cantidad de automóviles a altas velocidades.*

I tell you that Máximo Gómez is also known as El Generalísimo, and he was one of the most renowned military strategists who fought during the independence wars. Although he gave his life for the cause of independence in Cuba, Gomez was of Dominican origin, which gives him more merit for his internationalist character. As a curious fact, I would like to share with you that because Gomez is a foreigner, his statue was placed facing the sea. This location is a requirement of the time when the work was inaugurated, where it was established that the figures that were not born in Cuba, should be positioned facing the sea. One of the elements that most distinguish this set, are the 3 female figures and the 3 equine figures that seem, in a masterful way, to merge into a unit.

> *Les cuento que Máximo Gómez es conocido también como El Generalísimo, y fue uno de los más reconocidos estrategas militares que combatieron durante las guerras independentistas. A pesar de que puso su vida en pos de la causa independentistas en Cuba, Gómez era de origen dominicano, lo que le concede más mérito por su carácter internacionalista. Como dato curioso les comparto que debido a que Gómez es extranjero, su estatua fue colocada mirando al mar. Esta ubicación constituye un requerimiento de la época en que fue inaugurada la obra, donde se establecía que las figuras que no fuesen nacidas en Cuba, debían posicionarse mirando al mar. Uno de los elementos que más distinguen este conjunto, son las 3 figuras femeninas y los 3 figuras equinas que parecen, de forma magistral, que se funden en una unidad.*
