Simón Bolívar Park: a mix of nature, history and culture in Old Havana [eng/spa]

At the confluence of Mercaderes and Obra Pía streets, in the iconic Old Havana, stands the Simón Bolívar Park. This is one of the most paradisiacal places in this area to sit and enjoy a natural environment, in the midst of the incessant movement of the city. Hundreds of people pass through it every day, and it is also a recurring point for the large groups of organized tourism that move through this area, taking into account that very close by are other sites of interest such as the House dedicated to Benito Juárez and the Casa de la Obra Pía (House of the Pious Work). Even, right on the side of this park, there is a museum dedicated precisely to the figure of Bolivar, which is a perfect complement to learn more about the history of this emblematic figure.

> *En la confluencia de las calles Mercaderes y Obra Pía, de la icónica Habana Vieja, se erige el parque Simón Bolívar. Este es uno de los sitios más paradisíacos de esta zona, para sentarse a disfrutar de un ambiente natural, en medio del movimiento incesante de la ciudad. Diariamente es transitado por cientos de personas, y además es un punto de recorrido recurrente para los grandes grupos de turismo organizado que se mueven por esa área, teniendo en cuenta que muy cerca se encuentra otros sitios de interés como la Casa dedicada al Benemérito Benito Juárez y la Casa de la Obra Pía. Incluso, justo en el lateral de este parque, se ubica el museo dedicado precisamente a la figura de Bolívar, lo cual constituye un complemento perfecto para conocer más de la historia de esta emblemática figura.*

Upon entering the park, the first thing you notice is the statue of Bolivar built in bronze, which looks imposing on top of a marble plaque that refers to the year of birth and death of this figure.  In one of his hands, Bolivar holds a saber, and in the other, he holds a document tightly. I consider that these details show the visitor, in a very subtle way, some of the fundamental characteristics of this hero of history: courage, fighting spirit and thought. This work has a deep historical significance because Simón Bolívar, who is also known as El Libertador, is a character that becomes a reference in the processes of the independence struggles that took place in the region of America. Curiously, I tell you that this set, which has been inaugurated more than 30 years ago, is a replica of the existing one in the Plaza Mayor in Bogota.

> *Al acceder al parque, lo primero que se observa es la estatua de Bolívar construida en bronce, que luce imponente encima de una tarja de mármol que refiere el año de nacimiento y deceso de esta figura.  En una de sus manos, Bolívar sostiene un sable, y en la otra, aguanta con fuerza un documento. Considero que estos detalles le muestran al visitante, de forma muy sutil, algunas de las características fundamentales de este prócer de la historia: valentía, espíritu de lucha y pensamiento. Esta obra tiene una profunda significación histórica porque Simón Bolívar, quien también es conocido como El Libertador, es un personaje que deviene como referente en los procesos de las luchas independentistas que se sucedieron en la región de América. Curiosamente, les cuento que este conjunto, que tiene ya más de 30 años de inaugurado, es una réplica del existente en la Plaza Mayor de Bogotá.*

The park brings back excellent memories, because due to the presence of abundant and lush vegetation, during many summers it has been a meeting point for my group of friends, and even a place to rest after a long walk under the intense sun that shines in Havana during most of the year. In the middle of the park there is a small fountain, from which all the angles of this space can be observed.

> *El parque me trae excelentes recuerdos, porque debido a la presencia de vegetación abundante y frondosa, durante muchos veranos ha sido punto de encuentro y reunión con mi grupo de amigos; e incluso de descanso luego de una extensa caminata bajo el intenso sol que brilla en La Habana durante la mayor parte del año. En medio del parque se encuentra una pequeña fuente, desde la cual se observan todos los ángulos de este espacio.*

In addition to history, this park also has its touches of art. On one of its sides there is an immense mural created by the Venezuelan artist Carmen Montilla Tinoco. It stands out for the presence of intense and varied colors and shapes. This work has a simple but moving dedication, as the artist says it is dedicated to Old Havana and to Eusebio Leal, who is one of the Cuban figures who has professed most love for this city. There are also some Portuguese tile panels showing two unclothed children holding musical instruments in their hands in a very nice way. This work was a donation from the Portuguese Embassy in Havana, in 2019, due to the celebration of 100 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

> *Además de historia, este parque también tiene sus pinceladas de arte. En uno de sus laterales se observa un inmenso mural creado por la artista venezolana Carmen Montilla Tinoco. Este se destaca por la presencia de intensos y variados colores y formas. Esta obra tiene una dedicatoria sencilla pero emotiva, pues la artista refiere que está dedicada a la Habana Vieja y a Eusebio Leal, quien constituye una de las figuras cubanas que más amor ha profesado por esta ciudad. También se pueden apreciar unos paneles de azulejos portugueses, que muestran dos niños sin vestidos, que sostienen, de forma muy simpática, instrumentos musicales en sus manos. Esta obra fue una donación de la embajada de Portugal en La Habana, en el año 2019, debido a la celebración de los 100 años de relaciones diplomáticas entre ambos países.*
