The palace where two cultures meet [eng/spa]

The Plaza de Armas (Square of Arms) is surrounded by very interesting places. Among them is the Segundo Cabo Palace, a Cuban baroque-style building that treasures amazing exhibition halls. I visited this building as part of the summer activities offered by the project of the Office of the Historian of the city, called Rutas y Andares, which organizes very interesting tours through the historic center of Havana. I was fortunate to choose this itinerary, as this was one of the sites I had not yet visited in the square. The location of the palace is privileged: the street where it is located is O'Reilly, which already transmits you to another era because of its cobblestone structure. Near this site you can access other places such as the iconic Castle of the Royal Force, who is your closest neighbor, and the Santa Isabel Hotel. There are even two sculptures on its side, one representing Ferdinand VII and the other of Charles III.

> *La Plaza de Armas está circundada por lugares muy interesantes. Entre ellos se encuentra el Palacio de Segundo Cabo, que es una edificación perteneciente al estilo barroco cubano, que atesora salas de exposición sorprendentes. La visita a este inmueble la realicé como parte de las actividades de verano que ofrece el proyecto de la Oficina del Historiador de la ciudad, llamado Rutas y Andares; que organiza recorridos muy interesantes por el centro histórico de La Habana. Tuve la fortuna de escoger este itinerario, pues este era uno de los sitios que aún no había visitado en la plaza. La ubicación del palacio es privilegiada: la calle en la que se ubica es O'Reilly, que desde ya te transmite a otra época por su estructura empedrada. Cerca del este sitio se pueda acceder a otros lugares como el icónico Castillo de la Real Fuerza, que es su vecino más cercano; El Templete y el hotel Santa Isabel. Incluso, en su lateral se ubican dos esculturas, una que representa a Fernando VII y otra de Carlos III.*

This building was designed by the Cuban-born engineer Antonio Fernández de Trevejos y Zaldívar, and at that time its objective was to make the surroundings of the Plaza de Armas much more harmonious. I confess that I did not expect to find everything I saw inside, since the name of the place suggested another type of content. At present, this place constitutes the Center for the interpretation of Cuba-European cultural relations; which is closely related to the fact that in its beginnings, the palace was the office of the post office administration, which turned Cuba into a mediator between the postal communication between Europe and its colonies in America. The first room I visited shows a huge sphere of the world, and on it are marked the routes followed from Europe to America by Christopher Columbus. These were the four voyages, on behalf of the Spanish kings, made during the period of discovery of the New World.

> *Esta edificación fue diseñada por el ingeniero de origen cubano Antonio Fernández de Trevejos y Zaldívar, y en aquel entonces tuvo como objetivo lograr que el entorno de la Plaza de Armas fuera mucho más armonioso. Les confieso que no esperaba encontrar todo lo que vi dentro, pues el nombre del lugar me sugería otro tipo de contenido. Actualmente, este lugar constituye el Centro para la interpretación de las relaciones culturales Cuba- Europa; lo que guarda estrecha relación con el hecho de que en sus inicios, el palacio era la oficina de la administración de correos, que convirtió a Cuba en mediador entre la comunicación postal entre Europa y sus colonias en América. La primera sala que visité muestra una enorme esfera del mundo, y en ella están señalizadas las rutas seguidas desde Europa hacia América por Cristóbal Colón. Estos fueron los cuatro viajes, en representación de los reyes españoles, realizados durante el período de descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo.*

This place has the peculiarity that seeks to mix sensory stimulation with physical works. And in that sense, my favorite room is the one I show you below, which simulates an old ship in the middle of a storm. Therefore, the wooden floor is in motion, and through the opening that symbolizes one of the ship's windows, if you reach out your hand you can feel the same cold air as if you were in the middle of the sea.

Y en ese sentido, mi sala preferida es la que les muestro a continuación, que simula un barco antiguo en medio de una tormenta. Por ello, el piso de madera se encuentra en movimiento, y por la abertura que simboliza una de las ventanas del barco, si se extiende la mano se puede sentir el mismo aire frío que si se estuviese en medio del mar.*

Another of the most striking rooms is called the Tunnel of Time. It shows a very interesting chronology of the main facts and figures of Cuba and Europe, which were very significant in their time, starting from the year 1492. It is a historical tour in full color, where in addition, on the back of this tunnel, several artistic works are shown.

En ella se muestra una cronología muy interesante de los principales hechos y figuras, de Cuba y Europa, que fueron muy significativas en su etapa teniendo como punto de partida el año 1492. Es un recorrido histórico a todo color, donde además, en el reverso de este túnel, se muestran varias obras artísticas.*

There is another interactive space, where through touch screens, you can choose one of the characters and learn about their biography and work, in an entertaining way.
