Touring a place full of art and sewing in Havana [eng/spa]

The house I share with you today is one of the places I declare as my favorite, considering all the visits I have made this summer.  The delicacy and femininity that emanates from each piece on display is fascinating. Particularly, it brings back very emotional family memories, as one of my most beloved aunts was dedicated, in a masterful way, to sewing; and despite the years I have to confess that every sewing machine directs my mind directly to her. The place I'm talking about is the Obra Pía House museum, located on the popular street of the same name in Old Havana.

> *La casa que les comparto hoy es uno de los lugares que declaro como mis preferidos, teniendo en cuenta todas las visitas que he realizado este verano.  La delicadeza y feminidad que emana de cada pieza en exhibición es fascinante. Particularmente, me trae recuerdos familiares muy emotivos, pues una de mis tías más amadas se dedicaba, de forma magistral, a la costura; y a pesar de los años tengo que confesar que cada máquina de coser dirige mi mente directamente hasta ella. Del sitio que les hablo es del museo Casa de la Obrapía, ubicado en la popular calle del mismo nombre, en la Habana Vieja.*

The building where the museum is located treasures one of the most interesting stories of the city. In the second half of the 17th century, the then alderman of the Havana City Council, Martin Calvo de la Puerta, established an annual dowry for five poor girls of the city. This charity was given by means of a lottery. Due to the values of the house, many years later it was converted into a museum, with the objective of recreating in an artistic way, many of the customs and traditions that characterized the colonial period. Currently, the second floor of the place is undergoing a process of renovation, but with pleasure I show you the exhibition that can be enjoyed on the first floor.

> *El inmueble donde radica el museo, atesora una de las historias más interesantes de la ciudad. En la segunda mitad del siglo XVII, el entonces regidor del cabildo de La Habana llamado Martín Calvo de la Puerta, instauró le entrega de una dote, de forma anual, a cinco chicas pobres de la ciudad. Esta caridad se entregaba mediante la realización de un sorteo. Debido a los valores de la vivienda, muchísimos años más tarde fue convertida en museo, teniendo como objetivo recrear de forma artística, muchas de las costumbres y tradiciones que caracterizaron la etapa colonial. Actualmente, la segunda planta del lugar está atravesando por un proceso de remozamiento, pero con placer les muestro la exposición de la que se puede disfrutar en la planta baja.*

The room that is open to the public shows the best of the sewing art of the time. In it you can see several images that explain in a masterful way, and in chronological order, many interesting details about the types of needles, sewing machines and characteristics of the costumes of that time. One of the elements that I enjoyed the most about the place are the scenes that are formed in some of the corners of the place. You can even see furniture preceded by large murals showing architectural designs, such as the huge glass windows, which must have provided a lot of clarity at that time. In my mind, I managed to draw a Havana afternoon with a needle, thread and loom in my hand.

> *La sala que está abierta al público muestra lo mejor del arte de la costura de la época. En ella se pueden observar varias imágenes que van explicando de forma magistral, y con un orden cronológico, muchos detalles interesantes sobre los tipos de agujas, máquinas de coser y características del vestuario de aquel entonces. Uno de los elementos que más disfruté del lugar son las escenas que se forman en algunas de las esquinas del local. Incluso se puede observar mobiliario precedido de grandes murales que muestran diseños arquitectónicos, como lo son las enormes ventanales de cristal, que deberieron otorgar mucha claridad en aquella época. En mi mente, logré dibujar una tarde habanera con una aguja, hilo y telar en la mano.*

In one of the museum's stations, there is a sewing cabinet of the time, which was used to store all the sewing materials. These were hand-painted, and were made with such a high level of detail that they were also used for decorative purposes. There is also a fascinating collection of sewing machines in the museum. There I learned that the creation of these machines was one of the most recognized inventions of its time, which made the incorporation of women into the workforce possible.

> *En uno de las estaciones del museo, se exhibe un mueble costurero de la época, el cual se usaba para guardar todos los materiales de costura. Estos eran pintados a mano, y se confeccionaban con tanto nivel de detalle, que además usaban para fines decorativos. También existe en el museo una fascinante colección de máquinas de coser. Allí supe que la creación de estos aparatos constituyeron una de las invenciones más reconocidas de su época, que viabilizó la incorporación de la mujer a la vida laboral.*

I had to recognize the elegance of the dress at that time, despite how uncomfortable it must have been to wear too much textile in the high temperatures. I even confirmed that one of the characteristics of the fashion world is its cyclical nature. And if you don't share the above statement, you will change your mind when you see the last image I share, which shows two dresses. Girls: would you wear them on a gala night?

> *Tuve que reconocer la elegancia del vestir en aquella etapa, a pesar de lo incómodo que debía resultar el exceso de textil con las altas temperaturas. Incluso confirmé que una de las características del mundo de la moda es su carácter cíclico. Y si no comparten la anterior afirmación, cambiarán de criterio cuando vean la última imagen que comparto, que muestra dos vestidos. Chicas: ¿los usarían en una noche de gala?*
