Hello friends, today I will discuss with you the topic of Chasing Dreams in a Fading Light A Reflection on The Great Gatsby. The details are given below. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of those books that you just cannot get out of your thoughts upon the reading of it. The book is built up in the roaring 1920s, and it depicts the glamour, dreams, broken illusions of the American society that had been changing so fast. The story alone would not make this a very memorable novel, but rather the emotion it leaves a twisted form of beauty and sadness that silently stabs the heart. The plot is narrated by Nick Carraway, a fellow man who migrates to the West Egg, Long Island and gets involved in the enigmatic life of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby who is rich. With everything money, a mansion, endless parties, Gatsby, however, appears to have it all, but it all stems out of one desperate hope of his life, to win the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan. But she already belongs to the beginning and irresponsible Tom Buchanan.

The style of writing of Fitzgerald is rich and poetic. Instead of narrating a story, he paints with words. We experience through the desire in Gatsby how potent and how anguish something unfulfilled can make dreams. His green light on the end of the dock in Daisy is a metaphor of all the things that we run in life and we may not actually get. That picture, so plain and yet profound, sends shivers down my spine when I think about it. The aspect that impresses me the most is that the novel reveals the hollow core of the so-called American Dream. Gatsby started as a poor man, made a fortune, and even then, he could not afford happiness or change the past. The glitter and the jazz conceal a facade of loneliness, heartbreaks and the real life that dreams are not always fulfilled particularly when fuelled by illusions.

The Great Gatsby is not a love story only or a social commentary but it is more of a mirror to our desires and regrets. I read it rather slowly and with the feeling that I was reading a work of sculpture, a dream which perhaps is beautiful but sad as well. Fitzgerald did not write a novel, he made a classic statement on human hope and disappointment. This book is, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It is not long, each line count. In case you have ever had an experience of running after something that remains at a distance, then the story of Gatsby will seem like yours and this is what makes this novel great.
