Why is Time Travel Always the Excuse?

When the game launched we heard about this place called the Mare Jivari. 1000 years ago it was visited by a group called the Wandering Troupe. But the dev team for this game changed and last September they made the mistake of saying that the Mare Jivari was only named 500 years ago in an event that created it. Obviously you can't visit a place that only existed 500 years after you did so that was a major continuity error.

To "fix" it the new devs hinted in v5.6 that maybe there was a time discrepancy but all parties were sure of both stories. In other words it became stated canon that the Mare Jivari was created 500 years ago but the Wandering Troupe ventured into it 1000 years ago. The only way that's possible is time travel.

So that's exactly what we got. In v5.2 a frenemy character named Enjou stole a map of something with a marker pointing to where the Mare Jivari was. This map turned out to be the current new region, Tenochtzitoc. Tenochtzitoc is actually the modern name for the entire land mass that includes the Mare Jivari because 20 years ago the whole place disappeared. As you play through the story you find out that it was actually Venti who had been a creation of Istaroth the God of Time and she gave him some of her time power. 500 years ago during the Cataclysm he used that power to offset the Mare Jivari from time thus making it exist in "all of time" and out of phase with the rest of the world. That way it technically existed 1000 years ago but was only created 500 years ago.

While it is finally an example of consistent storytelling with the setup starting in v5.2 and concluding now in v5.8, it was still all started by a goof from v5.0 of information we had had since the game's launch. Still hopefully this is a sign that the new devs are finally getting experienced enough to tell consistent stories as we get into Nod-Krai, Snezhnaya.
