We are in the grounds of the abbey when we come across a roof with a very unusual shape: that of the kitchen. Its original, almost pyramidal silhouette immediately catches our attention and sparks our curiosity.
This singular roof has long intrigued historians and architects. Some have suggested that the building might have served other purposes, such as a funeral chapel or a baptistery. But most experts today agree that it was primarily a large kitchen, designed to meet the abbey’s needs and to prepare meals for the entire community. Its imposing architecture is therefore not merely decorative: it also serves practical purposes, notably the ventilation of smoke from the huge ovens and chimneys, while providing a workspace suitable for the scale of the meals prepared.

Nous sommes dans les extérieurs de l'abbaye et c'est ainsi que nous découvrons un toit de forme très particulière : celui de la cuisine. Sa silhouette originale, presque pyramidale, ne manque pas de nous interpeller et suscite immédiatement notre curiosité.
Ce toit singulier a longtemps intrigué historiens et architectes. Certains ont émis l’hypothèse que le bâtiment pouvait avoir eu d’autres fonctions, comme celles d’une chapelle funéraire ou d’un baptistère. Mais la majorité des spécialistes s’accorde aujourd’hui à dire qu’il s’agissait avant tout d’une vaste cuisine, conçue pour répondre aux besoins de l’abbaye et permettre la préparation de repas pour toute la communauté. Son architecture imposante n’est donc pas seulement décorative : elle répond à des exigences pratiques, notamment l’évacuation de la fumée des immenses fours et cheminées, tout en créant un espace de travail adapté à l’ampleur des repas servis.
