Ya llega diciembre, y como este mes inspira festividad y llegó al año en #hive, aquí estoy con las Cosas de Iris para ir festejando. A veces pierdo la cuenta, pero esta es la Iniciativa XIII, un número que no se olvida fácilmente.
Los quiero invitar a hablar de esas Costumbres sencillas que convertimos en tradición.
Mi hermana tendría 13 años cuando yo tenía edad para recordar. Mi madre la mandaba a lavar los uniformes de ella y mis hermanos, y luego de tenerlos tendidos, se los hacía recoger porque aún estaban sucios.
Tender la ropa en alambres de púa sin que dejaran marcas era toda una proeza. Luego, se alzaba el cordel con una vara para tensar y que el aire y el sol le dieran con más profundidad.
Mi madre le decía: "quiero escuchar el sonido". Ese sonido no es más que el "chiquichaquí" del agua al estrujar la ropa. Supongo que es el símbolo de que está bien enjuagada, y es verdad que, si no, sale espuma.
Hoy, en mi faena de lavar a mano y deschurrar antes de poner en la máquina lavadora, recordé ese detalle.
Mi madre le hacía bajar aquel cordel para que volviera a lavar. Yo creo que era un acto de poder sobre la infeliz criatura, porque a la altura que estaban esos trapos movidos por el viento, ¿cómo podía ella ver tales detalles? Pero el caso era que se los hacía bajar si las camisas no estaban tendidas por el cuello y los shorts o pantalones abrochados, porque si no, el sol les hacía marcas.

Creo que mi hermana quedó con una especie de trauma, porque es muy cuidadosa al lavar y tiende todo por colores, tamaños y especialidad. También es parte del equilibrio emocional de cada cual: un orden preestablecido que nos complace en el momento de tender la ropa.
Así se lo inculcó a mi sobrina, y esta a su hija, de modo que da gusto ver sus ropas lavadas. El orden refleja y fortalece la paz interior. Organizar el espacio y los actos son actos serenos que calman la mente, reducen la ansiedad y generan una sensación de control. Este placer, lejos de ser rigidez o sacrificio, es un síntoma de equilibrio emocional y armonía interior en el momento de los quehaceres.
Y para concluir mis costumbres sencillas que se convierten en tradición, les muestro dónde pongo mis presillas o palillos para tender. No sé si es algo típico de las mujeres cubanas, pero sí lo veo muy frecuente.
Un día vi a una escritora publicar una foto, muy vestida de paseo y maquillada, con una presilla en el escote. Por supuesto, la imagen corrió como un meme representativo del despiste. Este acto es tan común porque cualquier sobre de café, detergente o leche que haya que cerrar, pues usamos una presilla y, por instinto, va a nuestra ropa.

Of Simple Customs
December is almost here, and since this month inspires celebration and it's my anniversary year on #Hive, here I am with Cosas de Iris (Iris's Things) to start the festivities. I sometimes lose count, but this is Initiative XIII, a number not easily forgotten.
I want to invite you to talk about those Simple Customs We Turn into Tradition.
My sister must have been 13 years old when I was old enough to remember. My mother would send her to wash her own and my brothers' uniforms, and after she had hung them out to dry, she would make her take them down because they were still dirty.
Hanging clothes on barbed wire without leaving marks was quite a feat. Then, she would lift the clothesline with a pole to tighten it so the air and sun would hit the clothes more directly.
My mother would say to her: "I want to hear the sound." That sound is nothing more than the "squeaking" of the water when wringing out the clothes. I suppose it's a sign that they are well-rinsed, and it's true that if not, soap suds appear.
Today, while hand-washing and pre-treating stains before putting them in the washing machine, I remembered that detail.
My mother would make her lower that clothesline to wash them again. I think it was an act of power over the poor creature, because with the clothes hanging so high and moving in the wind, how could she possibly see such details? But the point was, she made her take them down if the shirts weren't hung by the collar and the shorts or pants weren't fastened, because otherwise, the sun would leave marks on them.

I think my sister was left with a kind of trauma, because she is very careful when washing and hangs everything out by colors, sizes, and type. It's also part of each person's emotional balance: a pre-established order that pleases us when hanging the laundry.
She passed this on to my niece, and she to her daughter, so it's a pleasure to see their washed clothes. Order reflects and strengthens inner peace. Organizing space and actions are serene acts that calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and generate a sense of control. This pleasure, far from being rigidity or a sacrifice, is a symptom of emotional balance and inner harmony during chores.
And to conclude my simple customs that become tradition, I'll show you where I put my clothespins. I don't know if it's typical of Cuban women, but I see it very often.
One day I saw a writer post a picture, all dressed up for an outing and wearing makeup, with a clothespin on her neckline. Of course, the image spread as a meme representative of absent-mindedness. This act is so common because any bag of coffee, detergent, or milk that needs closing, well, we use a clothespin and, by instinct, it goes onto our clothes.
