El gallo no llegó al arte como símbolo de cultura popular por mera casualidad. Antes que se conociera la valentia, y policromía esencial en los "gallos" de Mariano Rodríguez, ya estas aves gozaban de mucha estima en los campos de Cuba.
El canto del gallo marca el ritmo de la vida en los campos. No es solo un ave de corral; es un símbolo entrelazado con la identidad del guajiro. Su presencia es un hilo constante en el tapiz de la tradición campesina, un reloj natural que anuncia el amanecer y el fin de la faena y en ello se inspiró la escultora Rita Longa para realizar El gallo de Morón.
Desde muy temprano el gallo con su clarín desafía el silencio y ordena la jornada, llamando a despertar no solo a las personas, sino a la tierra misma. Desde la morada ancestral el gallo es enviado a "pelear" por las causas justas, su energía y valor es un don sagrado
Más allá de su función práctica como despertador, el gallo encarna el espíritu de resistencia y orgullo criollo. Su figura, altiva y combativa, se refleja en el carácter del campesino. Es fuerte, noble y con un profundo sentido de la dignidad.
Aunque hay sentimientos encontrados sobre el asunto de la pelea de gallos, en Cuba se convirtió en una tradición, su pelea no se ve con crueldad, sino como una metáfora de la lucha diaria por la vida, donde la tenacidad es la clave para salir adelante. Es testigo de las tertulias, de los amaneceres en el campo y del sudor de los cafetales.
Así, el gallo es mucho más que un animal. Es la voz de la tierra, un guardián ancestral cuyo canto es el himno no escrito de la ruralidad cubana. Representa una herencia que se transmite de generación en generación, un legado vivo de orgullo, trabajo y pertenencia que sigue definiendo el alma del campo y es símbolo recurrente en el arte, asi podemos verlo en la pintura de Roberto Fabelo, Pedro Pablo Oliva.
La'presencia del galloen la obra de Fabelo simboliza la cubanía más visceral. Representa la pasión, la fuerza varonil y la sensualidad de la isla. No es un animal dócil, sino un ser mitológico, orgulloso y combativo, que encarna el espíritu ardiente del pueblo cubano.

En el Ayuntamiento de Luchón, en Los Pirineos franceses, se conoció.de esta tradición cubana por las obras del pintor cubano Rogelio Ricardo Fuentes, Allí en medio de las intrincadas montañas de europa pude hablar de nuestra cultura campesina y artística y en cada pluma pudieron observar toda la energia y la gama de colores del trópico.

The rooster did not become a symbol of popular culture in art by mere chance. Before the bravery and essential polychromy were known in Mariano Rodríguez's "roosters," these birds already enjoyed great esteem in the Cuban countryside.
The rooster's crow sets the rhythm of life in the countryside. It is not just a farm bird; it is a symbol intertwined with the identity of the guajiro (Cuban peasant). Its presence is a constant thread in the tapestry of peasant tradition, a natural clock that announces dawn and the end of the workday, and it was this that inspired the sculptor Rita Longa to create El gallo de Morón (The Rooster of Morón).
From very early on, the rooster with its clarion call challenges the silence and orders the day, calling to wake not only the people but the land itself. From the ancestral dwelling, the rooster is sent to "fight" for just causes; its energy and courage are a sacred gift.
Beyond its practical function as an alarm clock, the rooster embodies the spirit of resistance and Creole pride. Its figure, proud and combative, is reflected in the character of the peasant. It is strong, noble, and has a profound sense of dignity.
Although there are mixed feelings about the issue of cockfighting, in Cuba it became a tradition. Their fight is not seen as cruelty, but rather as a metaphor for the daily struggle for life, where tenacity is the key to moving forward. It is a witness to gatherings, to sunrises in the field, and to the sweat in the coffee plantations.
Thus, the rooster is much more than an animal. It is the voice of the land, an ancestral guardian whose crow is the unwritten anthem of Cuban rural life. It represents a heritage passed down from generation to generation, a living legacy of pride, work, and belonging that continues to define the soul of the countryside and is a recurring symbol in art, as we can see in the paintings of Roberto Fabelo and Pedro Pablo Oliva.
The presence of the rooster in Fabelo's work symbolizes the most visceral cubanía (Cuban identity). It represents the passion, masculine strength, and sensuality of the island. It is not a docile animal, but a mythological being, proud and combative, embodying the ardent spirit of the Cuban people.

In the Town Hall of Luchón, in the French Pyrenees, this Cuban tradition was made known through the works of the Cuban painter Rogelio Ricardo Fuentes. There, amidst the intricate mountains of Europe, I was able to speak about our peasant and artistic culture, and in every feather, they could observe all the energy and color range of the tropics.
