Hello, everyone!
I hope you're having a good week so far!
I have yet another rejected job application demo today :D These really started piling up, didn't they?
This one, I really enjoyed making. As usual, I was given two tasks. One, was an overpainting of a 3D figure, and for the second, I was to create a match-3 style game scene.
Task 1 - Overpaint
Let me show you the final result first.
Overpainting is a tedious yet fun part of the art for me. It takes long, requires quite an effort, but often I get lost in the flow and just enjoy the process. It happened with this one, too, especially when I was painting the armor. I loved doing that.
Here's the provided picture;
Must add, this 3d render is not mine. I was provided with this by the company and they asked me to hide their names.
It was my first time painting over something 3D. I was confused about how to approach the process at first. A day went by testing and researching how others do it. At last, I decided on a route.
I was asked to keep the prince's shape, but told I could get in detail. So I cut the pieces out one by one, by colors I'd give them. Arms, legs, skin, couch; that took quite a while but gave a clean result.
Like so. Quite a lot of layers, don't you think? Well, I duplicated them all for backup and set basic colors on them, with either hue/saturation adjustments or color layers.
He looks kind of creepy before the overpaint.
After this part, it was all overpainting and overpainting and overpainting... Enjoyable process nonetheless, but tiring too.

Task 2 - Game Scene
For this part, I took a different style for the sake of speed. I was preparing these in a 1 week time limit after all. The concept was a match-3 game, a character had to be included. So I came up with this.
Not the usual thing I do. The UI was a first for me. I still liked the result though.
For the most other pieces, like in-game tokens, character and power-up tokens, I took a pretty simple approach. Sketch, lineart, base colors, multiply shadows and overlay light. I think my favorite is the shroom.
Bonus Tasks
There were two bonus tasks. Pretty simple ones, too. A game icon for the store page;
And a live-ops sale screen
I'm still having fun with the fact that I did the coins on the go. I was preparing the page, and I just made a coin and duplicated it. Somehow it worked well.
So, this is how I overpainted as usual and made up a game. Still didn't get the job but, eh. If they didn't like it, they didn't like it. Nothing I can do. I lost my hope on game companies anyway.
I hope at least you people like them!
