I recall the time when I was about to leave school. I was filled with anxiety and fear of the unknown. Unknown of; what the future holds for me, what the world would look like outside school, what being independent would look like and how I would be able to cope. I thought of missing my friends, school mates and the fun and beautiful memories we shared over the years. These thoughts and more were all running through my mind.
As a school leaver, I know the same thoughts and more may be flooding your mind too right now. But be sure that moving forward in life requires an intentional approach to it. It requires new challenges and the courage to face the harsh reality of starting a brand new world of independence. While in school you may have had the dream to venture into a particular skill or profession, now is the time to harness such dreams.
***My Advice***
A lot of people leave school with the thought of what they will benefit from the government and the expectation of landing a well paying job. While that may not be out of place for high expectations in life, think outside the box. Look around you and find something of value you could give to society. It may be laundry, private shopper, affiliate marketing, digital skills e.t.c. Render services, look for a solution to a problem around you. When you proffer solutions to problems in the environment where you are, the money will come. Don't wait to start big, start with whatever you have and wherever you are, great things start small and grow over time.
Moreso, learn a new skill to add to your certificate. The present day world does not pay you for your certificate alone but what you can do. So many school leavers today waste a lot of time seeking for little or none available jobs while they can spend such time learning a skill and earning at the same time. Getting yourself busy learning a new skill will detach your mind from the idea of looking for a job and will eventually give you the opportunity to create jobs in return.
In addition, look for something to sell. Some people are so clouded with fear of the unknown that they miss great opportunities. Don't be like them. Some even go as far as saying “I don't know how to sell”, “I don't know how to convince people”, “I don't have enough capital to start”, and stuff like that. The truth is you must not have your own product for you to start of. I mentioned affiliate marketing earlier on, that is what it's all about. Sell other people's products and earn commission. And you must not have a physical shop to do that too. Leverage on the internet, use social media to create awareness for people to see what you do. Over time you may even have your own brand because you may have raised some money and gained the needed experience to start off on your own.
***Lastly,*** make good use of your smart phone. Let it be an asset and not a liability to you. There are thousands and one ways you could meaningfully and financially keep yourself busy on the internet today using your smart phone. There are some websites you visit and earn, you could even be a ghostwriter, copywriting and a whole lot of them. Just be willing to lean new things and be open to opportunities.
***Summary***
Leaving School is getting into another phase of life, which requires courage, intentional approach, open mindedness and the willingness to embrace completely new ways to start learning again. Instead of depending on the government to get a job, think of legitimate ways of creating one for yourself and society.
