Book Review: The feast of goat by Mario Vargas Llosa (ENG-SPA)

In April this year, Mario Vargas Llosa, the last of the great Latin American writers of recent history, died (along with Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar, and Carlos Fuentes). If I forgot to name any famous writer from Spanish-speaking America during this boom, I appreciate that you contributed to dispelling my ignorance. From the famous writer of Peruvian origin and naturalized Spanish and Dominican, I have only read "The Feast of Goat", in the days of its publication, back in the year 2000. Perhaps, following the wave in the enlightened circles that I frequented, and which predicted a re-edition of similar circumstances, but in my country. A quarter of a century later, I admit they had some reason. The Feast of Goat is a historical novel (mixture of reality and fiction) of almost four hundred and fifty pages, interwoven with three stories told that captures you in first person and present time, skillfully concatenated by the memories of its protagonists: Urania Cabral (fictional character), Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina (Dominican dictator) and the conspirators who perpetrated the murder of the goat (Trujillo himself). I won’t lie, 25 years is a long time to remember the details. So I embarked on a second reading, which at the time of writing is not yet finished. Now, from the perspective of a more critical and eager reader, to learn from the masters and craftsmen of fiction for my benefit. It should also be pointed out that, as the author himself stated, because it is a novel, it does not aspire to present a faithful and accurate chronicle of the events. Yes, it is based on real data and characters, but treated under the creative license that explores based on an empathy beyond the emotional, and the web of situations reflected. The corruption, the cult of the warlord’s personality, the pragmatic submission and sometimes cowardice of subordinates, machismo as a strategy to bend wills and undermine potential rebellions, or secure allegiances through sexual humiliation. Yes, a crude novel with explicit narratives, grotesque, difficult to digest for the most sensitive, based on events that took place in the sixties on a small Caribbean island with two nationalities. However, a timeless reflection, which will surely resonate in other continents, and that, sadly, portrays or points to current softened elements. It is needless to say that the style of the prose of the late Vargas Llosa is exquisite. Well-constructed, articulate sentences that convey emotion and dynamism. Even the dirty expressions are tolerable. For that which denotes the idiosyncrasy of people in the ill-spoken and accepted. Yes, you can wrinkle your brow, without falling into the itch to escape or look away. In the background, suspicions are confirmed in their own reactions. Do I recommend it? Yes, of course. Probably, in the narrative legacy of this winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize for Literature are better works. I know those who say that "The City and the Dogs" and "The War of the End of the World" are magnificent. So, those already come into my duties as a lover of reading. Meanwhile, without reservation, I recommend the novel about the last days of the Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. That, beyond pure entertainment, it also constitutes the commitment of the intellectual to denounce what is wrong in a society, such as abuses of power and their harmful consequences against human dignity.   At the time of writing, I also found a film adaptation of the book, starring Isabella Rossellini and Tomás Millán in the roles of Urania Cabral and The Goat, the alleged benefactor of the Dominican people. I was tempted to see it, but again, I am caught by the lyrics of Mario Vargas Llosa. You know, even if it is my second reading, very spaced in time, and without the detriment of suffering the paradox of the ship of Theseus. I feel that the film will be short of the original due to the complexity of the psychological handling of the characters. The Feast of Goat has been translated into more than 30 languages. Therefore, I doubt you have a problem reading it in your native language. I trust that it is of interest these brief comments and approach are of interest to the great writer who knew how to carry in the arts the commitment of the intellectual to the society in which he had to live.

En abril de este año, murió Mario Vargas Llosa, el último de los grandes escritores latinoamericano de la historia reciente, (junto con Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar y Carlos Fuentes). Si se me escapa algún célebre escritor de la América de habla española, agradezco que contribuyas en disipar mi ignorancia. Del insigne escritor de origen peruano y nacionalizado español y dominicano, solo he leído “La fiesta del chivo”, en los días de su publicación, allá por el año 2000. Quizás, siguiendo la ola en los círculos ilustrados que frecuentaba, y que vaticinaban una reedición de circunstancias parecidas, pero en mi país. Un cuarto de siglo después, admito que algo de razón tenían. La fiesta del chivo es una novela de corte histórica (mezcla de realidad y ficción) de casi cuatrocientas cincuenta páginas, hilvanada de tres historias contadas que te atrapa en primera persona y en tiempo presente, concatenada hábilmente por las memorias de sus protagonistas: Urania Cabral (personaje ficticio), Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina (dictador dominicano) y los conspiradores que perpetraron el magnicidio del chivo (el propio Trujillo). No os voy a mentir, 25 años es mucho tiempo para recordar los pormenores. Así que me embarqué en una segunda lectura, que al momento que escribo, aún no he terminado. Ahora, bajo la perspectiva de un lector más crítico y ávido de aprender de los maestros y artífices de la ficción para su propio provecho. Asimismo, es menester advertirle que, como el mismo autor afirmó, por ser una novela, no aspira a presentar una crónica fiel y exacta de los eventos. Sí, está fundamentada en datos y personajes reales, pero tratados bajo la licencia creativa que explora con base en una empatía más allá de lo emocional, el entramado de las situaciones reflejadas. La corrupción, el culto a la personalidad del caudillo, la sumisión pragmática y, en ocasiones, cobardía de los subordinados, el machismo como estrategia para doblegar las voluntades y socavar potenciales rebeliones o asegurar lealtades a través de humillaciones de carácter sexual. Sí, una novela cruda con narraciones explícitas, grotescas, difíciles de digerir para los más sensibles, basados en hechos acontecidos en los años sesenta en una pequeña isla caribeña con dos nacionalidades. Empero, un reflejo atemporal, que de seguro resonará en otros continentes, y que, lastimosamente, retrata o señala elementos suavizados vigentes. Está de más en decirle, que el estilo de la prosa del finado Vargas Llosa es exquisito. Oraciones bien construidas, y articuladas, que transmiten emoción y dinamismo. Incluso, las expresiones soeces, son tolerables. Por aquello que denota la idiosincrasia de los pueblos en lo mal hablado y aceptado. Sí, podéis arrugar el ceño, sin caer en el prurito de escapar o mirar al otro lado. En el fondo, las sospechas se ratifican en las reacciones propias. ¿Qué sí la recomiendo? Claro que sí. Probablemente en el legado narrativo de este ganador del premio Nobel de literatura 2010 se encuentran mejores obras. De hecho, sé de quienes dicen sobre “La ciudad y los perros” y “La guerra del fin del mundo” que son magníficas. Así que, ya entran en mis deberes como amante de la lectura. Mientras tanto, y sin reserva, les recomiendo la novela sobre los últimos días del dictador dominicano Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. Que, más allá del puro entretenimiento, también constituye el compromiso del intelectual para denunciar lo incorrecto en una sociedad, como son los abusos de poder y sus consecuencias nefastas en contra de la dignidad humana.   Al momento en que escribo, también encontré una adaptación cinematográfica del libro, protagonizada por Isabella Rossellini y Tomás Millán en los papeles de Urania Cabral y el chivo, supuesto benefactor del pueblo dominicano. Estuve tentado en verla, pero de nuevo sigo atrapado por las letras de Mario Vargas Llosa. Saben, aunque sea mi segunda lectura, muy espaciada en el tiempo, y sin el menoscabo de sufrir la paradoja del barco de Teseo. Intuyo que la película se quedará corta con respecto al original por la complejidad del manejo psicológico de los personajes. La fiesta del chivo fue traducida a más de 30 idiomas. Por lo tanto, dudo que tengáis problema en leerla en tu lengua natal. Confío en que sea de interés estos breves comentarios y abordéis confiado al gran escritor que supo llevar en las artes el compromiso del intelectual con la sociedad que le tocó vivir.
