Talking about overrated and underrated anime is entering into complex and dense territory because we're delving directly into people's tastes, which we all know are subjective and depend on the eye that sees and the mind that analyzes things. In a conversation I had with some friends, the topic came up about anime that could be categorized as "those that aren't that great, aren't that great," and it's interesting to think about that because everyone's opinion was completely different, perhaps with some agreement here and there. What makes an anime overrated? - its plot, animation, the repetitiveness of its story, the lack of depth and development of its characters? - I'll leave those questions to you.

No one disputes the impact this anime has had and what it's meant to many here, myself included, and on a nostalgic level, I'd believe it's one of the strongest. Anime, movies, and video games have made history over the years, proving that it's very entertaining to watch and play. But that doesn't mean that's the case. Pokemon has more than 1,000 chapters; it's an absurdly long and exhausting story that ultimately ends up being very linear. The body of the episodes is very similar to one another, rarely is there anything different about them. The impressive thing is that this didn't prevent Pokemon from being what it is today. The thing is, for me, I think this anime is a bit overrated when it comes to story and depth.

DBZ is everything to me. I grew up with it, and even today I still watch everything that comes out of its universe, but that can't blind my objectivity. In that conversation I had, many mentioned this anime, and there are some things I agree with them on. DBZ has a couple of problems that are probably the triggers for people's "hate" because yes, my friends, there are many people who don't like this at all. The first is the extremely long fights, many of which are pointless (it reminds me of the soccer ball that never reaches the goal in Captain Tsubasa), and the second is the little to no character development; I feel like they don't evolve (personally speaking). My devotion to this anime is utmost, but that doesn't exempt it from these flaws, which are quite noticeable.

When Game of Thrones ended, it threw away everything it had built up over the years. The same thing seems to be happening with SNK: it had a very polarizing ending, with final seasons that may not have lived up to the initial ones. But was this enough to put it on this list? That's where the real debate lies. The story gradually took on a much heavier, darker, philosophical, and diplomatic aura, to the point where it went from being pure survival to becoming an existential epic where four or five characters tell us their version of the story during each episode. What happens to me with this anime is that it has no middle ground when it comes to its fans; they either love it or hate it. I think it's a very good anime, but it's not one of the best, by any means.

The biggest criticism behind this is the sheer level of inconsistency between its episodes; the author simply lacks logic. In addition to the large number of filler episodes, it can have a significant amount of insignificant plot points or weight in the story. The incredible thing is that, like its predecessors, this anime's fame and popularity are immense; it's one of the greatest in the fantasy genre. And this leads me to a question: does being overrated have anything to do with that popularity? If you look closely, all these anime are incredibly well-known, yet they're the ones that receive the most criticism. To wrap up that conversation, other names came up, such as Bleach, One Piece, and even Sword Art Online. Tell me, do you agree? What anime is missing here?
