Sinners | Film Review

The first film I saw by filmmaker Ryan Coogler was Fruitvale Station, an independent film based on a true story, where the director demonstrated his talent for conveying emotions. And it dealt with a subject rooted in his culture. The success of that film took him to the big leagues. He went straight into the Marvel Universe and into Creed, the Rocky heir franchise. Most will know him from Black Panther and Creed, both very successful, profitable and the director is a key part of that success. I have no doubt that because of the good box office returns from those franchises he was told to make this movie. I think it was almost 100 million greenbacks for Sinners. I had it pending to see and knew very little about it. I thought it would be a thriller with some action and what a surprise I got. Sinners is a film, whose story reminds me of many B-movies I saw in my teens. If you have read some old posts, you know that I love that kind of movies. Only this one has a high budget, recognized actors and a great technical workmanship. The filmmaker takes a risk and comes out a winner. It is a somewhat unusual proposal and in the hands of someone without his background, any Hollywood major would have refused to make it, because it seems that there are several films in one. There is a gangster atmosphere, it has touches of blackexploitation, western, action movie, vampire horror, historical drama and musical. I understand the naysayers, who have always found this mix a bit grating, but I found it so fascinating, I rate it as one of the best films released by Hollywood this year. The plot follows twins Smoke and Stack, who return to Mississippi after working for Al Capone in Chicago. They decide to make money with a nightclub for the people of their culture, the African-Americans, for which they will gather excellent musicians, among them their young cousin Sammie, son of an evangelical pastor. A club of sin for everyone to spend money, get drunk and enjoy that moment of freedom, only they did not count that supernatural evil beings will also be seduced by the liberating music, turning the night into a bloody nightmare. ---- > La primera película que vi del cineasta Ryan Coogler fue Fruitvale Station, un filme independiente basado en una historia real, donde el director demostró su talento para transmitir emociones. Y trataba un tema arraigado en su cultura. El éxito de esa película le llevó a las grandes ligas. Entró directamente en el Universo Marvel y en Creed, la franquicia heredera de Rocky. La mayoría lo conocerá por Black Panther y Creed, ambas muy exitosas, rentables y el director es una pieza clave de ese éxito. > No me cabe duda de que por los buenos ingresos en taquilla de esas franquicias le dijeron que hiciera esta película. Creo que fueron casi 100 millones de billetes verdes por Sinners. La tenía pendiente de ver y sabía muy poco de ella. Pensé que sería un thriller con algo de acción y menuda sorpresa me llevé. Sinners es un film, cuya historia me recuerda a muchas películas de serie B que vi en mi adolescencia. Si has leído algunos post antiguos, sabes que me encantan ese tipo de películas. Sólo que ésta tiene un alto presupuesto, actores reconocidos y una gran factura técnica. > El cineasta se arriesga y sale ganador. Es una propuesta un tanto inusual y en manos de alguien sin su bagaje, cualquier major de Hollywood se habría negado a hacerla, porque parece que hay varias películas en una. Hay ambiente de gánster, tiene toques de blackexploitation, de western, de película de acción, de terror vampírico, de drama histórico y de musical. Entiendo a los detractores, que siempre han encontrado esta mezcla un poco chirriante, pero a mí me pareció tan fascinante, que la califico como una de las mejores películas estrenadas por Hollywood este año. > La trama sigue a los gemelos Smoke y Stack, que regresan a Mississippi después de trabajar para Al Capone en Chicago. Deciden hacer dinero con un club nocturno para la gente de su cultura, los afroamericanos, para el que reunirán a excelentes músicos, entre ellos su joven primo Sammie, hijo de un pastor evangélico. Un club del pecado para que todos gasten dinero, se emborrachen y disfruten de ese momento de libertad, sólo que no contaban con que seres malignos sobrenaturales también se dejarán seducir por la música liberadora, convirtiendo la noche en una sangrienta pesadilla.

The trailer may sell the film as a vampire horror story, but to me the filmmaker is paying homage to the Blues, a style that has its roots in African-American culture. The music is very important in the film and is something I loved, it was a pleasure every song, every beat. It is here where the composer Ludwig Göransson, in charge of the film's soundtrack, stands out. His arrangements and mix of styles is one of the strengths of the film. There is a mind-blowing sequence, between sounds of the past and the present, in which the director also takes advantage of the moment to stand out visually. At that point in the film I was already completely absorbed in the story. It is not the only sequence that I loved, I also enjoyed the sequence of the vampires dancing to the rhythm of a Celtic folk song. Music can open doors. It is Sammie's music that attracts Remick, the Irish vampire who tells them that it is their salvation, because they are all dead to society. They have nothing, they can take everything from them when the powerful want it. The KKK has not disappeared, they plan to eliminate them and Remmick offers them salvation. The director includes a social critique and part of the history of his culture, which suffered for a long time from racism and the injustices of the established power. All this under the aura of terror and fantasy. It also has references and inspirations to other stories, from Open to Dawn and the Vampire Chronicles. The director goes all out and wants to put it all in his film. There is also a lot of sensuality. Anything to do with vampires, deep down, has a sensual overtone. This has been lost a lot in recent Hollywood stories. Good thing the filmmaker has been given free rein and has brought sensuality and sexuality into the story. Recent movies have put me in a very bad mood, stories that all look alike and where the characters don't even fuck. Sex is part of our human nature. As for the cast, everyone is superb. From Michael B Jordan, an actor who has worked many times with the filmmaker. This is his fetish actor. And the rest of the cast, where Jack O Connel stands out as that Irish vampire that I loved. If you haven't seen it, let yourself get caught by this crazy story. Listen to its music and admire its staging. La música es muy importante en la película y es algo que me encantó, era un placer cada canción, cada compás. Es aquí donde destaca el compositor Ludwig Göransson, encargado de la banda sonora de la película. Sus arreglos y mezcla de estilos es uno de los puntos fuertes de la película. Hay una secuencia alucinante, entre sonidos del pasado y del presente, en la que el director también aprovecha el momento para destacarse visualmente. En ese punto de la película en el que yo ya estaba completamente absorto en la historia. No es la única secuencia que me encantó, también disfruté con la secuencia de los vampiros bailando al ritmo de una canción folclórica celta. > La música puede abrir puertas. Es la música de Sammie la que atrae a Remick, el vampiro irlandés que les dice que es su salvacion , porque todos están muertos para la sociedad. No tienen nada, pueden quitarles todo cuando los poderosos quieran. El KKK no ha desaparecido, planean eliminarlos y Remmick les ofrece la salvación. El director incluye una crítica social y parte del historia de su cultura, que sufrió durante mucho tiempo el racismo y las injusticias del poder establecido. Todo ello bajo el aura del terror y la fantasía. También tiene referencias e inspiraciones a otras historias, desde Abierto a Amanecer y las Cronicas Vampíricas. El director va a por todas y quiere ponerlo todo en su película. > También hay mucha sensualidad. Todo lo relacionado con vampiros, en el fondo, tiene un matiz sensual. Esto se ha perdido mucho en las historias recientes de Hollywood. Menos mal que el cineasta haya tenido vía libre y haya metido sensualidad y sexualidad en la historia. Las películas recientes me han puesto de muy mal humor, historias que se parecen entre sí y en las que los personajes ni siquiera follan. El sexo forma parte de nuestra naturaleza humana. En cuanto al reparto, todos están magníficos. Desde Michael B Jordan, un actor que ha trabajado muchas veces con el cineasta. Este es su actor fetiche. Pasando por el resto del reparto, donde destaca Jack O Connel como ese vampiro irlandés que me encantó. > Si no la has visto, déjate atrapar por esta loca historia.
