A rich Venezuelan Chinese rice dish, in the Montaña de Oro [Esp-Eng]

 Hace poco conversaba con mi cuñada, quien regresó de un país vecino, y me contaba que mientras estuvo por allá nunca consiguió un buen arroz chino. No porque no supiera bien o fuera de mala calidad, sino porque los venezolanos estamos acostumbrados a un tipo específico: el arroz chino al estilo venezolano. Ya había tenido esta conversación con otra persona que también había regresado de otro país, pero lo loco de todo esto es que, debido a la crisis económica, incluso en Venezuela ahora es complicado conseguir un buen arroz chino venezolano. ​Hace un par de meses, en nuestro aniversario de bodas, mi esposo y yo fuimos a comer a un sitio arroz chino, y aunque estaba rico y lo disfrutamos, la verdad es que hacía mucho tiempo que no conseguíamos uno de esos arroces con ese buen sazón, preparados con productos de excelente calidad que te dejan pensando en volver. Y digo "no conseguíamos" en tiempo pasado porque hace unos días, mientras estábamos en diligencias médicas con mi cuñada, se nos hizo tarde para llegar a casa y tuvimos que buscar dónde comer en la calle. >! [English version] >I was recently talking to my sister-in-law, who had just returned from a neighboring country, and she told me that while she was there, she never found any good Chinese rice. Not because it didn't taste good or was of poor quality, but because Venezuelans are used to a specific type: Venezuelan-style Chinese rice. I had already had this conversation with someone else who had also returned from another country, but the crazy thing about all this is that, due to the economic crisis, even in Venezuela it is now difficult to find good Venezuelan Chinese rice. > >A couple of months ago, on our wedding anniversary, my husband and I went to eat at a Chinese rice restaurant, and although it was delicious and we enjoyed it, the truth is that it had been a long time since we had found one of those rice dishes with that good seasoning, prepared with excellent quality products that leave you thinking about going back. And I say "we hadn't been able to find" in the past tense because a few days ago, while we were running medical errands with my sister-in-law, we were late getting home and had to find somewhere to eat on the street.    ​Esta búsqueda nos llevó a un restaurante de comida china llamado La Montaña de Oro. Aunque ya habíamos pasado por ahí varias veces, la verdad es que no nos habíamos atrevido a comprar, precisamente porque en todos los lugares en los que comprábamos por esa zona el arroz no era precisamente bueno. Pero ese día era tarde, había sol, hambre y cansancio, así que decidimos simplemente arriesgarnos y comer algo para poder recuperar energías para seguir con nuestras diligencias. ​La verdad es que este lugar nos sorprendió de manera positiva. Siento que no es tan conocido como debería, pero decidimos, a partir de ese momento, que cada vez que queramos comer arroz chino lo compraremos ahí. ​Para empezar, tienen excelentes precios, por lo que uno puede comer algo rico aun cuando tiene un presupuesto limitado.​ Además, es un sitio que está sumamente limpio y es bastante grande, de hecho, tiene dos pisos con un montón de mesas. >! [English version] >This search led us to a Chinese restaurant called La Montaña de Oro. Although we had passed by there several times, we hadn't dared to buy anything, precisely because the rice wasn't particularly good at any of the places we usually bought food in that area. But that day it was late, the sun was shining, we were hungry and tired, so we decided to just take a chance and eat something to recharge our batteries so we could continue with our errands. > >The truth is that this place surprised us in a positive way. I feel like it's not as well known as it should be, but we decided that from then on, whenever we wanted to eat Chinese rice, we would buy it there. For starters, they have excellent prices, so you can eat something delicious even on a limited budget. In addition, it's an extremely clean and fairly large place. In fact, it has two floors with lots of tables.   ​Nosotros quisimos quedarnos abajo porque la verdad es que necesitábamos ahorrar algo de tiempo. A la hora a la que fuimos, que fue pasadas las dos de la tarde, en la parte de abajo habían algunas mesas llenas, pero varias seguían vacías, así que pudimos escoger dónde sentarnos. La atención fue muy buena. Había música de fondo que no estaba super alta como para que uno tuviera que gritar al hablar, sino que tenía el volumen exacto para uno poder relajarse y comer tranquilo. ​Y, hablemos de lo bueno que estaba el arroz chino, simplemente puedo decir que es el mejor arroz chino que me he comido en mucho tiempo. Por supuesto que debe haber mejores, pero hasta ahora, este es el que más se asemeja a ese arroz chino venezolano que recordaba. Estaba preparado con jamon, pollo en cubitos y sus respectivos aliños, lo mismo que traen todos, pero con un sazón demasiado bueno. La salsa agridulce y la de soya, además, le dieron el toque perfecto. >! [English version] >We wanted to stay downstairs because we really needed to save some time. When we arrived, which was after 2:00 p.m., some tables downstairs were full, but several were still empty, so we could choose where to sit. The service was very good. There was background music that wasn't so loud that you had to shout to talk, but was just the right volume for you to relax and eat in peace. > >And let's talk about how good the Chinese rice was. I can simply say that it's the best Chinese rice I've had in a long time. Of course, there must be better ones, but so far, this is the one that most closely resembles the Venezuelan Chinese rice I remember. It was prepared with ham, diced chicken, and the usual seasonings, the same as everyone else's, but with an exceptionally good flavor. The sweet and sour sauce and soy sauce also gave it the perfect touch.   ​Como a mi esposo no le encantan los vegetales, solo pedimos un plato para compartir mi cuñada y yo con carne y vegetales, y debo decir que esto fue mi favorito del plato. A mí me encantan los vegetales, pero cuando están preparados bien, por supuesto que los disfruto aún más. Creo que los vegetales eran solamente brócoli, calabacín y zanahoria, y puedo prometer que no necesitaba nada más. Incluso podría comerme solo los vegetales y dejar la carne de lo deliciosos que estaban. ​Definitivamente, sentir de nuevo el sabor del arroz chino venezolano es increíble. Por supuesto, volveremos a visitar este lugar cuando tengamos la oportunidad, ya sea por el arroz o por un plato solamente de carne con vegetales. Aunque solo probamos estas dos cosas, la verdad es que todo lo que ofrecían se veía delicioso, pero como soy de las personas que siempre se va por lo más seguro a la hora de comer, como esto me encantó, creo que es lo que pediré la próxima vez. >! [English version] >Since my husband isn't crazy about vegetables, my sister-in-law and I just ordered one dish to share with meat and vegetables, and I have to say that this was my favorite part of the meal. I love vegetables, but when they're prepared well, of course I enjoy them even more. I think the vegetables were just broccoli, zucchini, and carrots, and I can promise you that I didn't need anything else. I could even eat just the vegetables and leave the meat because they were so delicious. > >It's definitely incredible to taste Venezuelan Chinese rice again. Of course, we will visit this place again when we have the opportunity, whether for the rice or for a dish of just meat and vegetables. Although we only tried these two things, the truth is that everything they offered looked delicious, but since I'm one of those people who always plays it safe when it comes to food, since I loved this, I think that's what I'll order next time.
