Hello everyone, great Hive community, I hope you're all doing great, lovers of good stories. This time I'm going to talk to you about an interesting novel. I'll give you my honest opinions on: A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik... A brand new novel by Naomi Novik, and on top of that, set in a magic school? It seemed like the universe was sending us just what we needed; the main idea, boom! It grabs you right away: a school for wizards, the Scholomance, where you either graduate or you die. There are no teachers there, right? Just students and a bunch of monsters, the 'malafikaria', lurking in the pipes, in the shadows, wanting to devour you at every turn! I was so ready to love this book like crazy, to have a new magic school saga to completely immerse myself in, but after finishing it... well, let's just say my feelings are a little... mixed, you know?
The idea, that's for sure, is absolutely brilliant! The first line, wow! It's one of the best I've read in a while: "I decided that Orion Lake had to die after the second time he saved my life." That's it, you're hooked, just like that! We have our main character, El (yes, Galadriel, what a name!), who's kind of lonely, has no friends, and, what a coincidence, has a knack for mass destruction magic, apocalyptic vibes! And then there's Orion, the school's pretty boy, the hero, who goes around saving everyone's life with his combat magic, the school itself, how cool! It's like a round tower that rotates downwards every year, so the seniors are at the very bottom, closer to the "graduation hall", which is nothing more than a hallway jammed with the most vicious and vicious monsters... the magic system is also super original: you generate mana by doing difficult things, from push-ups to weaving something super complicated, and you can even use spells as if they were currency! Look, even on paper, this world is great.
>Hola a todos, gran comunidad de Hive, espero que estén super bien, amantes de las buenas historias, en esta ocasión les voy a hablar de una novela interesante, les daré mis opiniones honestas de: A Deadly Education de Naomi Novik.. ¿Una novela nuevecita de Naomi Novik, y encima en una escuela de magia? Parecía que el universo nos estaba mandando justo lo que necesitábamos, es que la idea principal, ¡pum!, te atrapa al toque: una escuela de magos, la Scholomance, donde o te gradúas o te mueres, ahí no hay profes, ¡eh! Puros estudiantes y un chorro de monstruos, los 'malafikaria', que andan escondidos en las tuberías, en las sombras, ¡queriéndote devorar a cada rato! ya estaba listísimo para amar este libro con locura, para tener una nueva saga de escuela de magia donde clavarme por completo, pero después de acabarlo... pues, digamos que mis sentimientos están un poquito... encontrados, ¿saben?
La idea, eso sí, ¡es una genialidad, no hay duda! La primera frase, ¡wow!, es de las mejores que he leído en un buen, buen rato: "Decidí que Orion Lake debía morir después de la segunda vez que me salvó la vida".. con eso ya te agarró, así de una! Tenemos a nuestra prota, El (sí, Galadriel, ¡qué nombrecito!), que es medio solitaria, no tiene amigos y, ¡qué casualidad!, tiene una facilidad para la magia de destrucción masiva, ¡onda apocalipsis! Y luego está Orion, el niño bonito de la escuela, el héroe, que anda por ahí salvándole el pellejo a medio mundo con su magia de combate, la escuela en sí, ¡qué cosa más chida! Es como una torre redonda que va girando para abajo cada año, así que los de último año están hasta abajo, más cerquita del "salón de graduación", que no es más que un pasillo atascado de los monstruos más gandallas y feroces.. el sistema de magia también está súper original: generas maná haciendo cosas difíciles, desde lagartijas hasta tejer algo súper complicado, y los hechizos ¡hasta los puedes usar como si fueran como moneda! Improved with KREA. --- But here comes the "but" my people, is that at times the book seems more like a textbook, it feels more like you're reading a school textbook, instead of this world than a story that actually happens there... I read somewhere another reader who described it as a textbook for a story that happens there... especially the first half, like not much happens, you know? The story slows down throughout the first half, like not much happens, suddenly, boom!, the action stops dead, in the middle of an action scene, so that He can tell us a three-page internal story about the history of a particular monster, or the benefits of joining a little group, or how a specific spell works... it's a lot of information at once! And look, I love it when a world is well built, but it's like all the information is thrown at you. That completely killed the pacing and I had a hard time keeping up. The episodes felt endless, so long! It completely killed the pacing... I started to get bored, which is the last thing you expect. Since we're stuck seeing everything through El's eyes, and she's the typical loner who thinks the characters also feel kind of... flat, since we see everything from El's perspective, and she's the typical loner who thinks everyone hates her, well, there isn't a lot of cool interaction with others... it was hard to cheer for her when a big part of her personality is just complaining. Orion, on the other hand, is pretty bland, doesn't have much depth... then, the romance... the romance! It felt super forced, with no chemistry at all, it's sold to you as "enemies to lovers," but there's no spark or tension. >Pero aquí viene el "pero" mi gente, es que el libro a ratos parece más un libro de texto, se siente más como si estuvieras leyendo el manual de la escuela, en vez este mundo que una historia que de verdad pasa ahí.. por ahí leí a otro lector que lo describió como un manual de una historia que pasa ahí.. sobre todo la primera mitad, como que no pasa mucho, ¿saben? La historia se frena en todo la primera mitad, como que no pasa mucho, de repente, ¡pum!, la acción se para en seco, en seco, en plena escena de acción, para que El nos eche un cuento interno de tres páginas sobre la historia un monstruo en particular, o los beneficios de unirse a un grupito, o cómo funciona un hechizo específico.. es un montón de información de golpe! Y miren, a mí me encanta cuando un mundo está bien construido, pero es como si te aventaran toda la información encima.
Eso mató por completo el ritmo y me costó un buen seguirle el hilo, los capítulos se me hicieron eternos, ¡larguísimos!, mató el ritmo por completo.. me empecé a aburrir, que es lo último que uno espera. Como estamos atorados viendo todo desde los ojos de El, y ella es la típica solitaria que cree personajes también se sienten medio… planos, como todo lo vemos desde la perspectiva de El, y ella es la típica solitaria que cree que todo el mundo la odia, pues no hay mucha interacción así chida con otros.. era difícil animarla cuando gran parte de su personalidad es nomás estar quejándose. Orion, por otro lado, es bastante simple, no tiene mucha profundidad.. luego, el romance…, el romance! Se sintió súper forzado, sin nada de química, te lo venden como de "enemigos a amantes", pero no hay chispa ni tensión. ---  Created with Canva Pro. The detail that El is half-Indian, well, it feels like filler, like they put it in just to meet the diversity quota, but it doesn't give any more meat to the character, it doesn't add anything true... but what really left me with my eyes open was the part where El is given an Arabic exercise sheet! And she describes it with "happy, cartoonish" drawings, and check this out! It highlights "a man in a car about to run over a couple of hapless pedestrians," and with that she thinks he's a modern Arab! Look, I had to read it twice because I couldn't believe it... I mean, how is such a violent, almost terroristic image going to tell you he's Arab? That's a horrible, super damaging stereotype! I'm really surprised that that made it through the filter and made it to print. In the end, it’s one of those books with a 10/10 idea, but when it comes down to it, it falls halfway, the execution doesn’t reach it, the ending leaves you in suspense, a cliffhanger of those that some people love, but for me, it seemed like a really cheesy trick to get you to buy the next one, after a story that was mostly pure introduction, pure preparation… I really wanted to love Scholomance, but so much information at once, the weak plot and those problematic things that I told you, made the experience… bittersweet, my rating: **3/5**. I only recommend it if for you the most important thing is a super detailed world and you don’t care so much about a story with little plot or characters that don’t develop much… but for me, it was a read with its good things and its bad things, that in the end didn’t reach all the great things that it could have been… and well, that’s all for today’s review, take care! El detalle de que El es mitad india, pues como que se siente de relleno, como que lo pusieron nomás por cumplir con la cuota de diversidad, pero no le da más carnita al personaje, no le añade nada de verdad.. pero lo que sí me dejó con el ojo cuadrado, ¡fue una parte donde a El le dan una hoja de ejercicios de árabe! Y la describe con dibujitos "alegres y caricaturescos", ¡y ojo a esto!, destaca "un hombre en un coche a punto de atropellar a un par de peatones desventurados", ¡y con eso ella piensa que es árabe moderno! Miren, tuve que leerlo dos veces porque no lo podía creer.. o sea, ¿cómo que una imagen así de violenta, casi terrorista, te va a decir que es árabe? ¡Eso es un estereotipo horrible, súper dañino! Me extraña un montón que eso haya pasado el filtro y se imprimiera.
Al final, es de esos libros con una idea ¡de 10!, pero que a la hora de la hora, se queda a medias, la ejecución no le llega, el final te deja en suspenso, un cliffhanger de esos que a algunos les encantan, pero a mí, se me hizo un truco bien chafa para que te compres el que sigue, después de una historia que fue más que nada pura introducción, puro preparativo.. yo de verdad quería que me encantara la Scholomance, pero tanta información de golpe, la trama flojita y esas cosas problemáticas que les conté, hicieron que la experiencia fuera... agridulce, mi calificación: un **3/5**. Se los recomiendo solo si para ustedes lo más importante es un mundo súper detallado y no les importa tanto una historia con poca trama o personajes que no se desarrollan mucho.. pero para mí, fue una lectura con sus cosas buenas y sus cosas malas, que al final no le llegó a todo lo genial que pudo haber sido.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense mucho!
